Arc A750 with incorrect resolutions and not support HDR10

Hi,

I recently switch my AMD 5700xt to Arc A750, and found that the resolution and refresh rate is wired on A750. Thanks for the support in advance.

Issue 1: Using DP1.2 connection: the maximum refresh rate is 59.997Hz not 60Hz. It doesn't support HDR at all.

Issue 2: Using DP 1.2 (PC) - HDMI 2.0 (Monitor) connection: the maximum refresh rate can recognize 60Hz and 59.94Hz, but the screen is over scaling (there is about 10% display go beyond the actual screen size). It can support HDR, not HDR10.

I see the following in the diagnostic data:

Simultaneous output of 3 x 4K @ 60 Hz has been supported since Skylake platform, so this shouldn't be a problem.

What kind of device is that on the HDMI port? Seems to be a display or capture device with a Realtek chipset. Another portable monitor?
Can you please tell me the brand of your Arc A750 graphics card?
What kind of cables or adapters (HDMI/USB-C) did you use to connect device #1 and #2? Links to the products would be best.

Regarding HDR vs. HDR10: For transmission via HDMI 2.0, a maximum of 18 Gbps is available with the video timing provided according to CTA-861 HDMI standard. This means:

4K @ 60 Hz RGB 8-bit with dithering HDR = 18 Gbps = 594 MHz TMDS = OK
4K @ 60 Hz YCbCr 4:2:0 10-bit HDR = 11.14 Gbps = 371 MHz TMDS = OK
4K @ 60 Hz RGB 10-bit HDR = 20.05 Gbps = NOT OK

You can read about the difference between the color models (RGB <> YCbCr) here.

This is why primarily 8-bit with dithering is used (by Microsoft Windows) when it comes to bandwidth limits, as the RGB color model is still better for a monitor than the YCbCr color model. This is in turn better suited for TVs, as pixel-accurate rendering is not needed there but higher bit depth provides more viewing experience if suitable sources (e.g. cine films) are watched.

DisplayPort 1.2 (CVT-RB): 4K @ 60 Hz RGB 10-bit HDR = 93 % HBR2 = OK

According to the diagnostic data you posted the Acer KG281K offers these parameters to the graphics driver:

So, 59.997 Hz is presented by the monitor and this is OK.

I'd connect the VFV device to the HDMI port of the Arc A750 and the RTK to DisplayPort. All connections should be made without adapters if possible, so that the original protocol is used. The Acer KG281K must definitely be able to show 4K @ 60 Hz HDR10 via DisplayPort. Please test this with the monitor alone if necessary and unplug the other devices for testing.

Yes, my PC connects one 28 inch monitor (Device 3, Acer) and two portal screens. The hardware ID of #1 is RTK1B1A. No further information available.

Can you please tell me the brand of your Arc A750 graphics card?

The funny thing is that Device #1 and #2 works well with HDR, but the HDR option is completely disabled in #3 (Acer one)!! From the monitor information, confirmed the DP format is 1.2 (by using the DP-DP cable COXOC E119932T).

Thanks for the additional information, everything seems to be fine.

As you can see from the data you posted earlier, the Intel driver receives the so-called Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) from each display device via the cables. I analyzed the data and in contrast to the other two monitors the Acer monitor does not send any information via DisplayPort that it supports the ITU-R BT.2020 color space. But that is a requirement for activating HDR under Windows.

The only explanation I can think of is that DisplayPort version 1.2 does not actually have to support HDR according to the specification and that's why Acer may have left it out. I did not notice this at first because Intel has actually supported HDR via DP1.2 for a long time. But since the monitor can obviously process the color space via HDMI, we can try to add the information manually. I can't promise that it will work, but in my test environment (Iris Xe with driver 31.0.101.5593 without a real monitor but with the corresponding simulation) it works to get Windows to offer HDR. I was also able to activate HDR this way. Please proceed as follows:

Download Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Run CRU.exe
Make sure the active EDID is that of the Acer KG281K monitor connected to your Arc A750 via DisplayPort. If necessary, select from the drop down menu.
Proceed as follows:

Only select "BT.2020 RGB", close ALL windows with OK and restart the computer.

If this procedure does not make HDR appear, then unfortunately we have to accept that the monitor only supports HDR via HDMI and the monitor's DisplayPort hardware is a limitation.

Thanks again and appreciated the detail instruction.

Still no luck after following the instruction. (Even tried to reduce the refresh rate to enable HDR10)

Based on my further research on Google, seems this is a common issue for ACER KG281G on nVidia cards (with DP connection) as well, but it works very well with AMD graphics card.

Anyway, it is a chance to upgrade my monitor. DP1.2 is too old now.
