Expose XMX acceleration path on Linux for ML upscaling and Frame Generation (Arc GPUs)

Hello Intel Graphics Team,

with the recent Windows driver release (32.0.101.8509), Intel Arc GPUs now officially support XeSS 3 including Multi-Frame Generation (MFG).

However, on Linux (Mesa / ANV Vulkan driver), the XMX acceleration path does not appear to be exposed to the open driver stack. As a result, Linux users currently cannot utilize XMX-accelerated features such as:

ML-based upscaling (e.g. XeSS XMX path)

Frame Generation

Multi-Frame Generation (MFG)

Potential future ML rendering features relying on XMX

This request is not limited to XeSS 3 specifically.
The broader concern is that Arc GPUs contain dedicated XMX hardware for ML workloads, but under Linux this capability is not accessible for real-time graphics features such as ML upscaling or frame generation.

Many users chose Intel Arc specifically because of Intel’s strong history of Linux support and open driver development. Currently, there is a noticeable feature gap between Windows and Linux regarding ML-accelerated rendering.

Could you please clarify:

Are there plans to expose the XMX compute path in the Mesa/ANV stack?

Is ML-based upscaling and frame generation via XMX planned for Linux?

Are there architectural or licensing constraints preventing this?

Is feature parity with the Windows driver a long-term goal in this area?

The Linux gaming community would greatly appreciate transparency and, if possible, progress toward enabling XMX for ML-accelerated graphics features.

Thank you for your continued work on the open-source graphics stack.

Best regards
[GPU: Arc A770M CPU: 12700H OS: CachyOS ]

Hello Carky,

Thank you for posting in Intel community Forum.

For me to better understand and diagnose the issue further, let me ask you to provide detailed responses to the following questions. This information will help me isolate the problem and determine the most appropriate course of action moving forward.

What is the brand and model of your system?

Can you share some screenshots?

Kindly provide the link of the latest driver that you used.

For me to review the hardware and the driver installed, please help generate the SSU logs of your system. Kindly refer to the link below for the steps:

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your response and for providing the link to the Intel System Support Utility.

To clarify, this is not a system-specific issue or driver malfunction. My system is functioning correctly.

My inquiry concerns architectural feature exposure in the Linux graphics stack (Mesa/ANV + Xe KMD), specifically whether the XMX acceleration path for ML-based real-time rendering features (such as XeSS, Frame Generation, or Multi-Frame Generation) is intended to be supported under Linux.

Since this is a general feature and roadmap question rather than a troubleshooting case, system logs generated by SSU would likely not provide relevant insight.

Could you please advise whether this question can be forwarded to the Intel Graphics driver engineering or open-source development team for clarification?

I am primarily seeking transparency on:

Whether XMX acceleration for ML-based rendering is planned to be officially supported under Linux

Whether feature parity with the Windows Arc driver is a long-term objective in this area

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,
Marc H.

I guess this is an overall "Graphics drivers and support of features like XeSS (FG) and XMX Units under Linux environments" request.

I think this is quite an important issue considering the planned G3 handheld derivates of Panther Lake as Linux and SteamOS in particular is a big thing in gaming handhhelds.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your follow-up.

Just to clarify: I’m not designing a system or developing an app. I’m asking purely as an end user interested in Intel’s long-term graphics driver strategy for Arc GPUs under Linux.

My question is simply whether XMX-accelerated ML rendering features (like XeSS or Frame Generation) are planned to be supported in the Linux graphics stack, and whether feature parity with the Windows Arc driver is a long-term goal.

So this is more of a general roadmap/platform question rather than a development support case.

I think PKD-NeXuS already summarized it quite well as an overall Linux graphics feature support question.

If possible, I’d appreciate if this could be forwarded to the appropriate graphics engineering or open-source team.

Best regards,
Marc H.
