Network Interface Card (NIC) to timemark each received frames

Our company is developing a tool to capture the raw data between other two devices, like Wireshark. Below image provides a brief setup for this tool.

I reviewed the X550-T1 specification, but still struggled whether the below requirement can be met:

When the frame arrives the NIC, the NIC shall timemark each received Ethernet Frame. The time resolution shall be 10μs or better. (Note: The tool is independent from Device A or Device B.)

I assume that there is a clock running and a register will be periodically updated on the X550 NIC. When each Ethernet Frame arrives the NIC, the NIC saves the received frame into a buffer together with the current valule in the register. Our application reads out these data from the buffer. Therefore, our tool could determine the time deviation between two successive Ethernet Frame.

Please confirm whether my proposal works for this NIC and whether the driver provides the API. Or please Intel experts provide an alternative approach including the NIC.

Thanks.

Hello Mike,

Actually, we are designing a system with embedded X550-T1. In the early phase of this system, we are analyzing the capability of this NIC to validate that it could meet our requiremens.

Thanks.

Hello, @Chunhua:

Thank you for contacting Intel Embedded Community.

The Intel part number X550-T1 is related to an Ethernet Converged Network Adapter, which is unsupported through this channel specialized in embedded products. You can confirm this information on the following website:

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/88208/intel-ethernet-converged-network-adapter-x550-t1.html

However, we need to address the following question to understand this forum:

Could you please provide pictures of the topside markings of the Intel Ethernet controllers related to this situation?

We are waiting for your answer.

Best regards,
