Hello,

I've seen many threads regarding connection drops and slow speeds from other users. Please see below for my computer specifications, however do advise if additional system details are necessary:

- Intel i9-13900K Processor

- Asus ROG STRIX Z-790-E Gaming Wifi Motherboard

- Intel Ethernet Controller I226-V; Driver Version 2.1.3.3(from Asus)

- Windows 11 Pro (64-Bit)

- Energy Efficient Ethernet = Off

- TCP Checksum Offload (IPv6) = Disabled

- UDP Checksum Offload (IPv6) = Disabled

- Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power = Unchecked

The update to driver version 2.1.3.3 corrected the intermittent connection drops, however browsing is still very slow to a majority of websites (Examples: Youtube, Google and Intel). I recently found out my ISP (Verizon) is rolling out IPv6 in my area and there is an issue with the Intel I226-V and their ONTs. The recommendation of disabling TCP and UDP IPv6 Checksums has not resolved the issue and they have provided no further solutions. I'd prefer to not disable IPv6 at the router level or within Windows.

I've switched to the onboard Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 and my browsing speed has returned to normal. The sites above are loading quickly and I'm no longer seeing a speed degradation outside of a WiFi connection versus an Ethernet cable.

I'd like to know if Intel intends to resolve this issue going forward and, if so, when I can expect a resolution?

Thank you,

Dave

Hi DSC174,

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this issue.

Yes, this is a known issue since we have seen similar case across different model of motherboard and sometimes it happen depends on modem/switch model.

Intel is still continue working towards finding/providing a robust solution and unfortunately we might not yet be able to identify the expected timeline or duration. However we value all the information that you have share with us and we will give our best effort to help.

We might need additional information from you in order to do further analysis and let us know if you are able to provide below information:

Windows 11 build version:

Bios version:

Cable Modem:

Network Switch:

Internet connection speed: 1gb/2.5gb?

Speed & Duplex: Have you configure to auto or match your internet connection speed?

Impacted apps: Does the slow speed only impact on browser app or other also like e.g. Spotify/Netflix/Steam?

We recommend you to check on iPerf tool as per below link. This tool will help you monitor the network speed. If you have any other network performance tools that can monitor what is the average speed within your environment then it will be good too.

Link: https://iperf.fr/

Since driver version 2.1.3.3 is a new release, perhaps if you're able to share your result regarding the new driver with OEM (ASUS) then later they might be able to give some recommendation or suggestion.

Best regards,

Fariz_Intel

Hi @Fariz_Intel,

I appreciate your response and I'm glad to provide additional information in support of troubleshooting:

Windows 11 build version: 22621.1413

Bios version: 0502

Cable Modem: Please note I am only using the router from Verizon without a network switch (The ethernet cable is going from the Verizon router directly to the Intel I226-V):
- Model Name: CR1000A
- Firmware Version: 3.2.0.7
- Hardware Version: 0.0.6

Network Switch: N/A

Internet connection speed: 1Gb

Speed & Duplex: Have you configure to auto or match your internet connection speed?
- It is currently set to "Auto Negotiation", however I experienced the same issue with it set to "1.0 Gbps Full Duplex".

Impacted apps: Does the slow speed only impact on browser app or other also like e.g. Spotify/Netflix/Steam?
- It appears specific to browsing websites through the browsers I use (Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge). I also use Spotify and Steam, however did not notice any issues with those applications.

I am working on tracking the average network speed, however from recent speed tests, I am right around 800-850 Mbps download and 800-850 Mbps upload. Please let me know if exact values are required and I'll let the capture run for an extended period of time.

As for the driver from Asus, I haven't seen any further updates since they published the 2.1.3.3 version on their website. The driver was made available for download on March 3, 2023 and is listed specifically for my motherboard.

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi DSC174,

We are sorry for our late response. In that’s case, yes we recommend to let the capture run for an extended period of time. You may try utilize iPerf since its will give more details on network speed especially it can capture the lowest and highest speed detected.

You also can use ping command to test the connectivity in few different situation:

Only run Browser. (use ping command/check speed when open website page)

Run Steam and Browser together. (try download file from Steam and open website page at same time)

Run Steam and Spotify together. (try download file from Steam and play Spotify at same time)

Below link is the similar case posted on community with different Motherboard model and OS version that we believe worth for you to check:

https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/Intel-R-Ethernet-Contoller-I226-V-Download-Speed-drop-MSI-MAG/m-p/1450780#M31993

Best regards,

Fariz_Intel

I haven't had an opportunity to run a network capture, however I don't believe network speed is the issue. I've been using the onboard Wi-Fi card since my last post and haven't had any issues in game, browsing or streaming. Asus published another driver on March 21, however the version is the same and it hasn't solved the problem.

I can see others are still having the same issue with browsing speed, so please let me know if you need any further information regarding the network equipment in use from Verizon.

Hi DSC174,

Sometimes we also can isolate browsing speed issue by running the network capture.

Since the latest driver behave differently depends on motherboard model, perhaps you may share your result with Asus support.

Hi @Fariz_Intel,

I haven't had much availability to troubleshoot since this is my primary machine and wireless has been working without an issue. Asus is using the Intel I226-V network card on this motherboard, so I'm not sure how they'd be able to offer any further support given this is specific to the network card's behavior with particular ISP hardware:

Does the Verizon Router CR1000A have Energy Efficiency Ethernet (EEE) settings?

No, I've logged into the router and haven't found this setting within the router itself. I've verified EEE is disabled within the driver settings for the network card.

Is there any specific website that you don’t see any browsing speed issue?

No, however it is much more noticeable when browsing to Youtube and Twitch. The Youtube videos are very slow to load, if they load at all, and Twitch streams/chat are inconsistent.

Is it possible for you to test with different OS such as Windows 10/Linux and see if issue still persist?

Unfortunately no, however this issue has already been reported on Windows 10 in other posts.

I've been checking daily for any new drivers from Asus, however there has been nothing new since March 21, 2023 (driver version 2.1.3.3 for Windows 11 64-Bit). Is Intel still working to identify the root cause and release a new driver in the future?

Thank you for your help and regular follow up!

Hi DSC174,

Thanks for the information. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Since OEM design their product using Intel component, OEM driver might be optimized/customized for their product which means there are some differences between OEM driver and Intel Generic driver however both driver still can works.

Rest assure that Intel still continues working towards solutions as per other community post below and we will cross check with engineering team for any browser speed issue suggestion:

https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/Intel-Communication-Intel-Ethernet-Controller-I226-Series-Random/td-p/1453177/page/2

We would be grateful if you could provide any link post that have the same issue with you.

I have the same issue with the Asus Prime X-299 motherboard. Wifi works fine but ethernet loads slowly and sometimes not at all.

I installed another intel ethernet card and still have the same issue. I'm still running on Windows 10.

My MacBook works fine on the same ethernet port with the same Cat6 wire connect directly to the CR1000A.

Thank you @dburgs! The video card I am using covers the motherboard slot where I'd install a different Ethernet card, so unfortunately I'm unable to take this as a troubleshooting step. I am glad to see others are experiencing the same issue as I've been forced to use wireless for a consistent experience.

Hi @Fariz_Intel,

I may open a support case with Asus as a next step, however they still haven't released a newer driver since March 21, 2023 (Version 2.1.3.3 for Windows 11 64-Bit).

The reason I'd prefer not to disable IPv6 at the router level is to not impact my wireless performance. I am willing to take this as a temporary step for troubleshooting to confirm it resolves the slow browsing issue while using the I226-V if that would be helpful. Please let me know of any new findings or next steps from the Intel perspective in the interim.

Thank you,

Hi Dave,

I don't know if you've seen this link, https://community.verizon.com/t5/Home-Internet-Fios-and-High/CR1000A-and-G3100-MAJOR-ISSUES/td-p/1564110/page/2 but seems everyone is having the same issues.

I requested to get back the G3100 (so I have both right now-G3100 and CR1000A) and the same ethernet issues exist on both.

BUT... I finally found a workaround that works well! I started thinking, my 'usb-c to ethernet' adapter works great on my MacBook pro, so I tried it on the the usb-c port on my Asus motherboard. AND it works! I get 825 download and 915 upload speeds and it is stable. All pages load fast and with no lag.

I guess until intel works out the driver issues with these Fios routers this is the best fix.

Hope this helps! It has been driving me nuts for a couple of months.

Hi Dave,

I just found another solution where you can use your ethernet card. There is an issue in both Verizon routers with the IPV6. If you go into the router you will see that IPV6 doesn't have any data. Turn off IPV6, hit apply and let the router reboot. The ethernet cards work fine now.

Let me know if this worked for you!

I may have found a "solution" after trying many different actions:

1. Updated drivers with clean install

2. Enabled LAN in bios

3. Disabled Power Managment

4. Disabled "Energy Efficient Ethernet"

5. Changed cables and routers

Nothing helped untill i sett "Speed & Duplex" to firm "2.5 Gbps Full Duplex" not auto. Hope this helps <LI-EMOJI id="lia_slightly-smiling-face" title=":slightly_smiling_face:"></LI-EMOJI>
