Asking about Realsence development kit R200

Dear all

I want to buy a Realsence development kit (R200) for my project. And I have some questions.

- First, if I buy the kit, is the Usb3-Cable attached with the kit or I have to buy it separately ?

- Seccond, Can the Realsence development kit (R200) be used in ROS-Kinematic on ubuntu?

The R200 camera is about to be retired as the super-powerful new D415 and D435 cameras are introduced. It is therefore available for purchase in the Intel Click online store for just $99.99 until September 30 or until stocks run out.

Regarding the cable question: with my own R200, I got the cable as part of the R200-based Robotic Development Kit. So to confirm if the cable came with the ordinary R200, I looked on YouTube for 'unboxing' videos, where people record themselves opening and unpacking a new product to show what's inside the box when they buy it. It did indeed contain the same R200 box that the Robotic Kit has, with the cable inside.

Regarding your final question about whether the R200 will work with ROS-Kinematic: do you mean ROS Kinetic? If so, the article below shows the R200 and Robotic Development Kit being used with ROS Kinetic Kame.

So according to the article you give me, I can use the Realsence R200 with ROS in my laptop ,right ?

If your laptop has a USB 3.0 port and the laptop's processor is a 4th Generation Intel core "Haswell" type processor or newer generation of Intel Core then the R200 should work fine with it. You should also ideally have Windows 10 on it, though the R200 can work with the 64-bit version of Windows 8.1.

The generations are:

4th - Haswell

5th - Broadwell

6th - Skylake

7th - Kaby Lake

8th - Coffee Lake

A quick way to tell what generation you have from your processor's code number is to look at its first number. For example, if a processor is 6500U then it is 6th Generation, because 6 is its first number.

If your laptop meets the specifications for the R200 that are listed above (Wndows 8.1 or newer, USB 3.0 and a processor that is 4th Generation or newer) then it should work with Ubuntu and ROS Kinetic Kame.

A guide for using the R200-based Robotic Development kit recommends using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Kinetic Kame, saying ""Ubuntu 16.04 LTS OS and ROS Kinetic Kame is supported for the RDK" (Robotic Development Kit)

The Robotic Development kit is just an Ubuntu mini-computer on a single board without a casing that you plug the camera's USB cable into to act as the computer to use the camera with. Plugging the camera into your laptop will do the same thing as using the camera with the mini-board.
