Quoting from the model comparison document for the 400 Series cameras, the D415 has approximately a 70-degree field of view (FOV). The D435 model has a wider field of view of approximately 90 degrees.

https://www.intelrealsense.com/compare/

When you say you need a field of view of 10" x 20", I am guessing that you mean that you need the camera to be able to observe an area of that size in inches within its view? The easiest way to fit things into the view is to increase the distance between the camera lens and the observed objects, of course. The 400 Series cameras can depth-sense up to 10 meters, though depth accuracy can start to drift noticably past about 3 meters from the lens.

Visualizing what 20 inches high looks like, I believe you should be able to fit that within the field of view in a distance of less than 3 meters. Sensing from a distance becomes more of a problem though when trying to get depth readings from very small objects.

Intel's illustrated camera tuning guide is an excellent reference.

https://realsense.intel.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/63/BKM-For-Tuning-D435-and-D415-Cameras-Webinar_Rev3.pdf

The guide includes advice on focus (left-click on the image to view it in full size).

Marty Thanks a bunch We're trying to use the camera to scan vacuum generated foot images(to build orthotics) that will then be sent to a 3D printer or milling machine

I am reminded of a case from 2018 where a company that produces custom-fitted helmets for people with non-standard head shapes due to disability. They needed advice on scanning the head of the person that the helmet was being designed for.

https://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D50P0000490TLjSAM/some-advice-or-guidance-required?language=en_US

Thee is software compatible with the 400 Series cameras called LIPScan 3D, where you can put the object on a turntable and create a 3D model on the computer just by rotating the object on the turntable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N14Pi6z-MkE&language=en_US

RecFusion is also highly recommended by 400 Series users doing 3D modeling. It has a Pro version that supports capture with multiple cameras.

https://www.recfusion.net/index.php/en/gallery

Hi Marty Still having trouble getting a focused 3D image. Looked at all the material you noted, but couldn't find a step by step setup procedure. The You Tube Intel RealSense Viewer Introduction gave me a start but the switching to 3D at minute 1:25 did not give me the head shot as shown. I continue to get the color map. Any thoughts Glenn

Finally got the 3D picture to work. Changing the Texture setting, after switching to 3D, to Intel D415 Color (fromD415 Depth) was the key. Have Meshlab downloaded so now going to work on exporting a PLY file. Here's a link that may get me started--- https://www.andreasjakl.com/capturing-3d-point-cloud-intel-realsense-converting-mesh-meshlab/?language=en_US.
