running latest ivf compiler on windows 8

I have been developing my program using ivf 11.1 as a proper windows app on windows 7. However, with my new computer which has a windows 8 operating environment, I find I cannot develop my program any longer. Does the latest version of ivf composer (xe 2013) allow one to develop one's program as a proper windows app rather than just operate using the console mode?

Yes, but so did version 11.1. What do you find is not working in Windows 8? While we never supported that combination, I think it should work if you were using VS2008.

Yes, Composer XE 2011 should work fine. (That's not the same as 11.1., which is the previous version) I am not sure what you mean by "as a proper Windows application", though. What problem are you seeing with 11.1?

You don't have to have VS2008 as Composer XE 2011 includes either VS2008 Shell or VS2010 Shell (depending on which update you get) - both should work fine on Windows 8.

File explorer can be used to make a desktop shortcut to the .chm documentation.

The compiler command windows shortcut on mine looks much the same as on older Windows, just more difficult to capture:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe /E:ON /V:ON /K ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Composer XE 2013 SP1\bin\ipsxe-comp-vars.bat" intel64 vs2012"

Apple made a big success of adding a learning curve; who knows if it will work now for Microsoft.

It was composer xe 2011. Not sure why I had problems in getting it going on windows 8 as I thought it had windows vs 2008 imbedded in it. Anyway I tried installing it again and was asked if I wanted to integrate windows vs 2010, to which I answered in the affirmative and now everything appears to run as before on windows 7. Thanks for your help.

The trial version doesn't include the Microsoft Shell components, but the purchased version does, with a set portion of the price going to Microsoft. If you give up your Visual Studio and don't need C or C++, you can re-install using the VS Shell which is included in ifort. It's the same on Windows 8.x as earlier Windows, except that I believe VS2008 or earlier aren't recommended.

If you need Visual Studio for the trial, you can use the 90-day trial of Visual Studio 2012 or 2013 Professional Edition of higher. When you are done with the trial, uninstall Fortran and Visual Studio. If you purchased Intel Visual Fortran you can then download the installer that includes the needed Visual Studio bits.
