Does the device support 1600x900? Provide the full model number of the device. It sounds to me like the max resolution for the device is 1366x768.

The native resolution of the built-in display in your laptop is 1366x768. You cannot use any higher resolution on this native resolution.

Now, if we are talking about an external display (connected via either the DP or VGA ports), there are two situations to consider,

If you are duplicating the desktop on the external display - that is, showing the same information on both the built-in and external displays - then you will be limited to 1366x768 resolution on this external display regardless of its actual native resolution.

If you are extending the desktop - that is, allowing the external display to be used independent of the built-in display - then you should be able to use higher resolutions than that of the built-in display: Via the DP port, you should be able to use an up to 2560x1600 display at its native resolution. Via the VGA port, you should be able to an up to 1920x1080 display at its native resolution.

Hope this explains things,

According to the HP knowledge base article for this laptop family, there was indeed a version of this laptop released with a Core i7-4650U that supported a 1600x900 display. Whether you will be able to find one of these is debatable; we are talking about laptops that were released way, way back in 2013. Frankly, I would be looking for a newer generation laptop. There are plenty out there that support 1920x1080 or even higher resolutions.
