Is this a laptop (or tablet) that we are talking about?

Laptop manufacturers will often modify the generic graphics driver package from Intel to configure and/or add support for custom features of their laptop design. If this is the case and you install a generic driver package from Intel, you would be losing the benefits of the modified packages, may end up with features that do not work properly (or not work at all) and you can sometimes end up with an unstable system.

Because the laptop manufacturer knows the ramifications for their product of a generic package from Intel being installed instead, they will configure Windows Update (via the Microsoft Catalog, not anything you have control over) to only install their modified packages. Intel also has checks in their generic driver package installers to recognize that a customized driver has been installed and will stop to prevent its overwrite. This is the issue that you are running into.

It is recommended that you stick with the graphics driver packages provided by your laptop manufacturer. If you are in need of a newer release from Intel for some particular feature or bug fix, you need to contact your laptop manufacturer and request that they produce a new release of their driver package containing these features/fixes from Intel. If you cannot wait that long (or manufacturer refuses to help you because of expired warranty), and insist upon installing the latest generic driver package from Intel, you need to understand the ramifications of your doing so.

Ok, after reading this far, if you really, really want to update to the latest base driver package from Intel, there is a way to do so. Here is the general algorithm you need to follow:

Download - but do not install just yet - the latest driver package from the Intel site to the system on which it will be installed. Again, in your case, there is the link you need: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/776137.

Very important; do not proceed without doing this! --> Disconnect the system from the Internet. Unplug its Ethernet cable and/or disable its Wireless solution. Note that, when disabling Wireless, it must be disabled in such a way that reboots can occur without it automatically being reenabled. If you get this wrong, Windows Update will cause problems and prevent this process from working properly.

In Apps and Features, check to see if there is an Intel HD Graphics or Intel Graphics entry. If not, skip forward to Step 6 and proceed from there.

Click on the Intel HD Graphics and/or Intel Graphics entry and select Uninstall.

Reboot the system, keeping Internet access disconnected.

From Device Manager, check if there is an entry for an Intel Graphics adapter. If you see only the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, skip forward to Step 9 and proceed from there.

Right-click on the entry for the Intel Graphics adapter and select Uninstall Device in the context menu that appears. On the following screen, checkmark Delete the driver software for this device and then click on the Uninstall button.

Go back to step 5 and proceed from there.

Install the new driver package that you downloaded in Step 1.

Reboot the system.

Reconnect Internet access.

Test.

Hope this helps,

...S
