Windows Update installs older driver version?

Why does Microsoft's Windows 11 Pro Update automatically update the Intel Iris Xe Graphics driver to version 31.0.101.4032 dated 12/21/2022 over Dell's version 31.0.101.4575 dated 7/11/2023 which is older?

This is because of multiple reasons, none of which have been corrected for a long time.

However, you can take these steps to avoid the problem in the short term.

Download the driver you want to install, and install it.

Reboot.

Immediately, use the wuShowHide microsoft tool (attached) to block/hide the driver you do not want.

I found other issues as well. I accepted all the fixes, then rebooted and ran Windows Update without another older driver wiping out a more current version. 😊

Afterward I ran "Dell recommends the following updates" and only 1 recommended which applies to functionality that I do not use on this Dell XPS 13 Plus 9320. So I think I'm good for now. 😉

Although I do not know the REASONS behind the problem. Seems like a disconnect somewhere. 🤔

Hello,

Apparently running the "wushowhide.diagcab" application is not a long-term solution because Microsoft Auto Update came back an overlays an older version for the Intel Iris Xe Graphic driver dated 12/21/2022 over Dell's newer version.

I re-ran the "wushowhide.diagcab" again with the fixes per instructions at the URL of https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8280-hide-show-windows-updates-windows-10-a.html.

Afterward I re-installed Dell's Iris Xe Graphics Driver, then PAUSED Microsoft's Auto Updates until a long-term solution can be found.

Any LONG-TERM solutions, or do I have to live with Microsoft messing my drivers up?

Hello,

I've continued to have the problem of Microsoft auto updates overlaying Dell's more recent graphic driver. I've continued to research, and have found a solution that works for now. I used the alternative method of using Local Group Policy Editor to stop Microsoft from updating drivers. The Dell XPS is still under warranty so I just run Dell Driver check and manually update anything shown out of date which insure the drivers to work with the laptop's architecture.

So it basically comes down to trust. Who do I trust to keep the laptop's drivers updated for security purposes in line with the architecture of the laptop. For now while under warranty it is Dell. I'll find out with the passage of time.

Run the dell drivers and block the microsoft supplied drivers and do not use the intel generic driver.

And, you do not have to use local group policy to do any of this.

Download the driver of your choice.

install it.

Reboot

Immediately run the wuShowHide microsoft tool (attached) and block/hide the driver you do not want.
