Laptop Windows 11 Poor UI Performance since new

Hi Guys hope you're all good.

I brought my Laptop 8 months ago the spec being:-

11th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H (24MB
Cache, up to 4.6 GHz, 8 cores)
15.6" OLED 3.5K (3456x2160)
64GB, 2x32GB, DDR4, 3200MHz
NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 3050 Ti 4GB GDDR6 [45W]
Intel UHD Graphics

Windows 11 Pre installed version 21H1 and all builds up to now 22621.1344 with Moment 2 installed have suffered this issue. This model is in Microsofts approved Windows 11 laptops.

There are no other performance issues at all e.g. playing 4K Videos, playing games etc is smooth.

The issue is with the general performance of the overall User Interface of Windows 11, transition animations stick and stutter, dragging windows around the screen flicker and jump when dragging around. When I say flicker the worst culprits are the MS Store, Settings App especially bad when the Personalisation Color Picker is visible, dragging those apps will cause dragging to stick jump and the contents to flicker like crazy.

Semi fix is to disable transparency effects in windows 11 Display Settings this gets rid of the flickering in windows although not as good as Windows 10. I've noticed there's maybe 5 seconds everything becomes really slick and smooth and then randomly bang, it all starts lagging and stuttering and flickering again .

At no point is there any load on the GPU,CPU,HDD or memory in Task Manager. No running programs in the background just a clean base install of Windows 11.

I have got so completely annoyed I tried an install of Windows 10 and that is a hugely different experience, its runs beautifully smooth in all aspects, so much so I use 10 now as my daily driver on this machine.

Steps taken to try to resolve Windows 11 UI glitches over the months-

· Disable Intel Speedstep, TurboBoost C states in bios in different arrangements

· Make sure the latest Dell bios is installed the day it is released.

· Reset Bios do defaults

· Restore of Dell factory build of Windows 11 using SuportAssist

· Download MS Windows 11 ISO direct from MS and format the SSD manually and do a clean build with ISO image

· Try lower display resolutions

· Disable Nvidia GPU in device manager

· Set Dell power management in Bios to Ultra Performance

· Keeping external power cable plugged in

· Using a wired mouse or wireless mouse with high poling rate

· Try an external monitor at high and low resolutions.

· Set a custom config in Windows Power Plan and set CPU for all states to 100% and disable power management in Pci Express

· Using DDU display driver uninstaller in safe mode and removed Intel UHD Driver and Nvida and re installed both using dell original and also tried the same with generic drivers direct from Intel and Nvidia

I've now ran out of ideas.

Again Windows 10 runs perfectly on this machine. No BSOD's hanging, issues in event viewer.

Using Manufacturer Supplied graphics driver Intel UHD Graphics 31.0.101.3616 I have tried your Intel generic drivers of the same number, Iris and Arc driver packages and older versions all exhibit choppy UI only under Windows 11

Driver 31.0.101.3616 and older run perfectly under Win 10 but choppy UI under 11

The only thing I haven't tried is to Install Win 10 and then run the upgrade to 11 previously as mentioned I installed Win 11 clean from scratch. Doing an upgrade is that something that may possibly work ?

Any ideas recommendations would be massively appreciated

I am sorry to hear what is happening with your Intel® Iris® Plus Graphics, I will gladly assist you here.

Have you tried a clean installation of your graphics drivers using the latest graphics driver? If the issue persists, try this process with the laptop manufacturer's driver.

Note #1: Make sure to check you have all the Windows updates before doing the driver installation.

Note #2: Since you have a laptop, we recommend checking with your System Manufacturer and use the driver software provided by them to avoid potential installation incompatibilities. Intel supplies generic versions of Graphics Drivers for general purposes. Computer manufacturers might have changed the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to the graphics driver software or software packaging.

Thanks very much for your help, unfortunately I’ve already tried those set of drivers and every incarnation, order including chipset drivers. I’m escalating to Dell now although it can run Windows 10 perfectly it cant do the same properly for 11. I had a reply from a fellow Xps owner last night with the same model and his runs flawlessly, so I have some very strange hardware fault.

hopefully Dell will swap out the mainboard and hopefully it will work.

Did you fix your stuttering issue with your Dell XPS 9500?

I am facing this problem as well and Windows 11 animations and UI experience is so choppy and laggy. But when I switch the resolution to full HD and also by turning off the transparency effect in Windows 11, the issue fades away and it gets really smooth. But, who hates more resolution? I really want to get the max out of this expensive machine.

So I am waiting to know about your experience.

Unfortunately I spent way too long on the issue and never did resolve it, however after much research and chatting to other Windows 11 users who have discovered the fault lays with the way Windows itself handles the screen. The desktop manager which handles all of the desktop display and compositing of the UI, a process called DWM.EXE compared to the windows 10 version it uses up in general double the GPU than windows 10, have a search on google for "windows 11 dwm high gpu" you'll see there's been many issues over time and still recently.

The original designers of Windows 10 purposely limited the use of transparency throughout the UI specifically because too much can cause slow downs and jitter.

Under Windows 10 with transparency enabled you would have noticed very subtle edge panels of windows for example using limited transparency effects and the rest of the window without, in windows 11 the designers have scrapped this idea and its full blown transparencies everywhere, a big mistake in the design. Built in laptop displays even on the highest gaming laptops have our problem after speaking with many as they still have limited GPU ram and only a small amount can be shared between the physical ram installed in the laptop. All good though if you have a desktop machine with a beefy GPU

My fix was to scrap the use of Windows 11 entirely on all my laptops and install Windows 10 which has zero issues with transparency on or off and in general runs a lot faster than 11. All UI animations and dragging of windows are buttery smooth compared to 11's jitter fest.

For me the whole Windows 11 experience has been a huge disappointment its still even now a bug ridden mess with so many issues too many to list here 🙂

I can guarantee you if you go back to Windows 10 your laptop will become a dream to use.
