Some further troubleshooting seems to rule out the HDTV, vga cable, and VGA port.

I can see the pc on a 19" LCD over vga.

I can see a pc image from my laptop on my Samsung tv over VGA

Both using the same cable.

The vertical scan rate input field is limited to just 5 characters. I can type 59943 or 59.93, but not 59.934

The Horizontal scan rate does not have this limitation, but cannot be changed manually.

In the System32 folder, there appears to be two versions of the utilities. I am not sure if one is for 32bit and one 64, but I have tried both.

CustomModeApp.exe and CustomModeApp2_0.exe

I have tried running them as an administrator, and in compatibility mode.

I have an HD 4000 with the 10.18.10.3496 driver on a Win7 64bit machine.

I am trying to run an HD Display monitor (Samsung) over a D-Sub connection. The Samsung Manual lists that I should set the PC to the following:

CVT-RB 1920X1080, Horiz kHz=66.587, Vert HZ=59.934, Pixel Clock 138.500, Sync Polarity +/-

But I am not able to set this up. First of all, when I plug it in, the screen is just blank (Because the tv is not getting the signal it is expecting). When I try to set custom resolutions, CVT-RB is not an option (just cvt and GTF). Then under advanced, it won't let me set the pixel clock, and I don't know what front porch/back porch, sync width, and active are. If I just try and save the profile with the basic info set, it says "This custom resolution already exists. Would you like to overwrite the existing data? If I say yes, it says "An error occured while adding the custom resolution."

Can someone please help me to force this resolution so I can use my display?

I would like to know what advanced setings to set to match the tv configuration. I am confused if a cvt custom resolution already exists, how come I can't enable it?

Thank you.

ADDED:

So rolling back the driver made the save error go away, but it didn't actually save anything. Uninstalled driver completely, reinstalled new driver.

I attempted to find the values from the DID I obtained, but I can't seem to get it right. The vertical scan rate only seems to be affected by the first two digits (59), anything I type after that does not affect the Horizontal scan rate, or the pixel clock; both of them showing wrong calculated values because I can't select them. The H Scan is 66.729 (instead of 66.587), and the clock is 138.79632 (instead of 138.500). Also I am not able to enter more than two decimal places in the Vertical scan rate, so I can't enter 59.934 even if it worked.

The values I put in are:

H Front Porch: 48

H Back Porch: 80

H Sync Width: 32

H Active: 1920

V Front Porch: 3

V Back Porch: 23

V Sync Width: 5

V Active: 1080

Scan rate: 59 (but 59.93 has same result).

This is the DID I obtained for my screen:

Detailed Timing Descriptor
Pixel Clock: 138.5MHz

Horizontal Active: 1920

Horizontal Blanking: 160

Vertical Active: 1080

Vertical Blanking: 31

Horizontal Sync Offset: 48

Horizontal Sync Pulse: 32

Vertical Sync Offset: 3

Vertical Sync Pulse: 5

Horizontal Display Size: 1018

Vertical Display Size: 572

Horizontal Border: 0

Vertical Border: 0

Interlaced: false

Stereo Mode: 0

Sync Type: 3

Hi kherova,

Thanks for all the information.

As first Step I would like you to try updating the graphics driver so please do the following:

Uninstall the current driver

Download the latest driver at the following link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3720&DwnldID=23714 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3720&DwnldID=23714

Based on the reports you are running an older driver version So please try updating it first. You can check the following document in case you have issue during the driver installation:

/docs/DOC-22542 https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-22542

Another good step is to try a different cable if possible. You can try with an HDMI or a DVI Single layer cable.

Thank you Kevin, but I have tried both drivers, neither of them function for my needs, currently, as neither of them are allowing me to create the custom resolution and implement it so far as I have tried thus far. I desire to use an analog signal over DSub, so HDMI and DVI are not desired alternatives. I have also tried two different VGA cables.

The HD 4000 should be capable of outputting a custom resolution with the software driver, and that is what I would like to do.

It would be helpful to know if:

1. I am doing something wrong (either using the wrong values, or overlooking some option of the software that must be set in order to achieve my goal)

2. my system (fact that it is 64bit, or some other condition) does not allow functionality with the driver

or

3. The design of the driver does not allow the setup of this custom resolution setting.

Resolution:

If # 1, then I would be grateful for suggested corrections to my process.

If # 2, then if you are aware of any system or 3rd party conflicts, I would be appreciative to know.

If # 3, then is there any workaround? I am concerned that the field for the Vertical scan rate ignores significant digits. Perhaps there is some way to instruct the driver to pay attention to the full 3 significant digits. The Horizontal scan rate (which you cannot set) populates with thousandths of mHz, so it seems like the driver on some level is capable of handling, it is just the input field that is not.

Based on your information you are not doing wrong and the driver provides fully capability under custom mode to create supported resolutions.

That is in fact what I've noticed on the graphics report. This report shows all the Monitor Supported Modes with the corresponding Refresh rates and I am afraid to say that the monitor you are using does not support Refresh rate 59Hz and this may be the reason why you are having this problem.

Is the edid block wrong, or is my manual?

Also, is it not relevant that I can't set the precise refresh rate and pixel clock to 3 significant digits beyond 59?

Once a custom mode is created, how do you force that mode?

This is from my manual:

If the signal from the system doesn't equal the standard signal mode, adjust the mode by referring to your videocard user guide; otherwise there may be no video. For the display modes listed below, the screen image has been optimized during manufacturing.

ModeResolutionHorizontal Frequency (kHz)Vertical Frequency (Hz)Pixel Clock Frequency (MHz)Sync Polarity (H/V)IBM640 x 35031.46970.08625.175+ / -IBM720 x 40031.46970.08728.322- / +VESA640 x 48031.46959.9425.175- / -VESA640 x 48037.86172.80931.5- / -VESA640 x 48037.57531.5- / -VESA800 x 60037.87960.31740+ / +VESA800 x 60048.07772.18850+ / +VESA800 x 60046.8757549.5+ / +VESA1024 x 76848.36360.00465- / -VESA1024 x 76856.47670.06975- / -<...

Thanks for the information. Based on my research it seems that when creating resolutions the software does not allow setting decimals on the resolution and this may be the reason why you are not getting the device properly.

Yep. Verified by sticking an AMD graphics card, and display works fine with them.

Not happy to have spent hundreds of dollars on Intel, just to have it not work by a poorly designed driver. Guess it is time to become an AMD fanboy instead of Intel. Bummer.
