Problem with Intel HD Graphics and VGA output

Hello,

I am trying to get the VGA output to an external monitor to work.

I am connected to my monitor directly using a standard VGA cable.

I am trying to enable primary display to the external monitor: I only get a black screen. The monitor says it is not receiving a signal.

When I try to clone or extend the display: same results.

Here is my setup:

Note: the external monitor works fine with my desktop computer and with a T400 laptop.

Hello,

We have tested the latest generic driver for this video controller, driver version 8.15.10.2509 and no similar issues have been seen or reported.

You can try using that generic driver and see if the issue persists. The driver is posted here:

You can also try updating your system BIOS and test setting the VGA monitor as the only active display (not using the integrated display of the laptop).

Test also leaving the VGA monitor connected and restart the computer. Check if there is any image on the VGA display if you enter the system BIOS and during the system boot up. Furthermore confirm if the VGA display is listed in the Device Manager and in the system report at the Intel(R) Graphics and Media Control Panel when it is connected. (Pretty much it is since the graphics driver console would not give you the option to do clone or extended if another display is not connected, but this would be just to double check).

Additionally, you might try using another model and manufacturer of display and try using a previous version of the driver provided by your computer manufacturer.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to check directly with your computer manufacturer to see if the hardware in your system and the software installed are working properly.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I had already tried the "generic" Intel driver you mentionned after completely uninstalling the device driver from device manager: without success.

I have tried another monitor from a different manufacturer: no luck.

To eliminate the device driver as a possible cause, I tried booting from an Unbuntu boot CD: no luck.

I have enabled boot display on the VGA port in the BIOS: screen remains black.

I am suspecting that the VGA port on my brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T420 is simply not working at all.

Most definitely a hardware problem (malfunctioning VGA port).
