Since a while I am not able to watch any movie with VLC, or open a picture (jpg, png) with the default Windows Picture Viewer. My Toshiba laptop comes with a Toshiba Video Player but that one also stalls when I try to open a movie. Also, the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel refuses to open. It shows the initial screen with the message "Initializing..." but closes again after 10 to 15 seconds.

I have the idea that this all started after I installed several updates for Windows.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro with Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) with Service Pack 1.

The processor is a Intel Core i5-5200U CPU.

Installed memory is 4 Gb

The Display Adapter is Intel HD Graphics 5500 with driver version 10.18.14.4264

Via Device Manager I tried to update the display adapter but my Windows is convinced that I have the latest drivers installed.

Is there someone who can help me with this problem?

Did you choose manual installation in device manager?

If so, try the similar "have disk method" described in Installation_Readme.txt

@Stefan3D:

Thank you for your quick response.

I looked into the manual install procedure but I have absolutely no clue about which download to choose. The list of drivers to download is endless. Another issue is the fact that I live on a remote island in Fiji. Our internet connection is slow, no i mean very slow. Downloading a 200Mb file would take hours.

What is the "have disk method" and where can I find it?

Hi,

I know that you have slow internet connection and downloading a driver could be hard for you, but I suggest uninstalling the driver that is installed right now and try with the Intel® generic driver. You can try the Beta driver posted above or the one that it was released previous to the Beta one.

Please see http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005598.html Uninstalling the Intel® Graphics Driver and Intel® Display

Also see how http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005629.html Manually Install an Intel® Graphics Driver in Windows® 10 and Windows 8*/8.1*

You can download the graphics driver here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26228/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=86210 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26228/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=86210

Regards,

Ivan.

The content is the same, just differently packed.

Now that you have the EXE, try the installer first.

If it fails again, right-click win64.exe and select "7-Zip / extract to folder win64"

Ignore checksum errors.

Then try the aforementioned have-disk method.

As I downloaded the exe-file, I decided to try the automatic install first. I got the following error message:

The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.

Setup will exit.

Is it safe to do a manual install or do I have to obtain drivers from Toshiba?

Yesterday, I made a new system repair disc and renewed my backup image so I decided to do the "Have Disk" method anyway, despite the error message. It installed the new drivers, at least, I thought it did. After a reboot I checked the version in the device manager and guess what, it shows the old version numbers. Am I out of options, now?

Your computer manufacturer customizes drivers that run Intel® components on your machine. You might lose functions and cause other technical issues by installing the Intel® drivers.

You can work around the error by first uninstalling the manufacturer's driver, then installing the Intel® Graphics Driver. However, you risk losing functionality or causing other technical issues.

In this case you will need to do manual installation, please see http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005474.html How to Manually Install a Graphics Driver in Windows 7*

You will need to get the ZIP file to do the manual installation.

If this does not work, you will need to get the driver from Toshiba.

http://support.toshiba.com/ http://support.toshiba.com/

Best regards,

Ivan.

I visited the Toshiba Support Website but was unable to get any information. After putting in my model or serial number, I only could choose Windows 10. So I gave up on that.

Because everything but the display of pictures/movies is working fine, I give up on the whole problem. I have a live Linux Mint USB stick that gives me perfect movie watching experience and crancking up the laptop with this stick is easy and quick.

Thanks to Stefan3D and Intel Corporation for trying to solve the problem. I really appreciate your help. If I somehow come up with a solution some day, some time, I will mention it here on this forum.

This is a little embarrassing. All the time I struggled with my Graphics Drivers, a recommended update in Windows Update from Intel was waiting to be installed. I installed the update, after an hours long download, and guess what? I can watch movies again with my favorite VLC media player and the Windows Picture Viewer works fine again. I didn't even had to restart Windows.

The version number of the installed drivers is 20.19.15.4531

So we can put "solved" to this issue.

Thanks again for the people who helped me.
