topic RTC function in Graphics

I read the datasheet of Cougar Point, it says that RTC has two functions:

1. keeping track of the time of day and storing system data, even when the system is powered down.

2. The RTC also supports two lockable memory ranges.

For item1, we all know that, for item2, I'm a little confused and I don't know what it means.

The RTC operates on a 32.768KHz crystal and a 3 V battery.

If RTC doesn't has 32.768KHz input to PCH, why will cause PCH no work?

thanks

Thanks

Tina
