Asus Laptop / Integrated Intel GPU problem

Hello,

I am using an Asus laptop (N551VW) that was working very well until recently.

It happened to crash seriously. The Windows recovery Tools didn't work, so I reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch.

I have one massive problem and can't find the solution. Everything works normally except the integrated GPU, Intel HD Graphics 530.

Indeed I can install every driver normally, but if I try to install the intel GPU's then my screen turns black, and the only way to use my computer again is to uninstall the intel GPU from Safe Mode.

The same problem happens if I don't block Windows update, as it is trying to update the drivers of intel GPU.

The other GPU, a NVIDIA 960m, is working without problem, with latest drivers intalled.

I tried a lot of things (reinstalling everything in different orders, formatting entirely my SSD,...), but nothing change the problem.

I am wondering if it means that my integrated intel GPU is dead or not.

Using GPU-Z, the intel GPU appears as Default Microsoft GPU (name is Skylake GT2, but no information in Bus Interface).

I could use my computer normally without the intel card, but that brings two problems :

1- I can't update Windows, otherwise it's upgrading the drivers and therefore crashes.

2- I can't control the screen of my laptop anymore, so I can't adjust the brightness or filter blue light.

After trying a new Intel driver that I installed in safe mode, I have a new type of error.

When my computer starts, it gets to a black screen, then off, then black screen, and so on, like searching for the monitor. Then gets to a blue screen error :

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE

with the failed element : igdkmd64.sys

Does anyone has an idea, or a solution?

Is the GPU dead? Is it a conflict between the two GPUs ?

Thank you for your help and insights.

The Intel GPU is actually part of a "System on a chip" together with the CPU.

If it was dead, your computer would not work at all.

To avoid automatic updates check out:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window

You didn't mention which Intel driver version you used.

First try drivers from https://www.asus.com/Laptops/N551VW/HelpDesk_Download/ N551VW Driver & Tools | Laptops | ASUS Global

Then try drivers from this list https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/88345/Intel-HD-Graphics-530 Downloads for Intel® HD Graphics 530

Select OS from right pull-down menu. Hit "show more".

To bypass message "best driver is already installed", "customized computer manufacturer driver" or "computer is not validated" install driver via have disk method as described at:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-intel-beta-graphics-drivers-surface https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-intel-beta-graphics-drivers-surface (ignore prolog about MS surface)

NB current drivers for Windows 10 require anniversary update or newer

Hello,

Thank you for your answer, unfortunately I still have the same problem no matter which Intel drivers I install, and no matter how I do it.

I tried with the following :

V20.19.15.4300

V10.18.15.4279

From Asus website for my computer (N551VW : https://www.asus.com/Laptops/N551VW/HelpDesk_Download/ N551VW Driver & Tools | Laptops | ASUS Global )

And also a few from Intel's website (like 15.60 / 15.45 / etc...)

I also tried to update the driver using some software from Intel, but got the exact same result.

When the drivers install I get a black screen, which switch on and off a few time (exactly the same as when your computer is looking for the right monitor when you plug a new one to your laptop), at some point the black screen shows my cursor which I can move, but then switch again to black screen and finally end up on a blue screen with the error:

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE

with the failed element : igdkmd64.sys

I also tried to install it in Safe Mode. The installation of the drivers gets to the end, says it's installed, but then when I reboot in normal mode I get the same black screen/blue screen situation.

Hello Calj17,

Thank you for joining this Intel Community.

I understand that you are unable to adjust the screen brightness of your computer. I would like to assist you.

First, I would like to know if these issues occurred after a Windows* or driver update. By knowing this, we can attempt to troubleshoot this issue.

Also, please run the Intel® System Support Utility and attach the report to gather basic system configuration.

1.Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application to your system.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-?product=91600

2.Open the application and click Scan to see system and device information. The Intel® System Support Utility defaults to the Summary View on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says summary to change to Detailed View.

3.To save your scan, click Next and click Save. You can save the file to any accessible location on your computer.

Wanner G.
