I have an HP Pavilion dv7 that was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 last August.

Before the upgrade there was no problem with the video. After the upgrade the system would apparently hang on startups and have to be repeatedly booted several times before it would stay up without hanging. The OS interface would start and I would start the Task Manager in Performance tab to monitor the CPU graph. If it stopped the cause was a display freeze. The reason is that certain features of the display would keep working such as the start button and the Action Center. After removing critical applications from the startup process I finally determined that the process was the system reported that the graphics driver had stopped and been reset. Then later the display which was frozen suddenly started working again after several minutes, indicating that there was indeed an issue with the graphics drivers and Windows 10 operating system. So far this issue has only shown itself while the system is loading. This problem can also manifest itself upon wake from sleep mode. If this does happen, there is no response and the only resolution is to reboot the laptop.u

Any help in resolving this issue would be welcome.

Thank you.

Here is the info from the display control panel:

Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000

Report Date: 11/2/2015

Report Time[hh:mm:ss]: 11:59:06

Driver Version: 9.17.10.4229

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home(10.0.10240)

Default Language: English (United States)

DirectX* Version: 11.0

Physical Memory: 6091 MB

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz

Processor Speed: 2295 MHz

Vendor ID: 8086

Device ID: 0116

Device Revision: 09

* Processor Graphics Information *

Processor Graphics in Use: Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000

Video BIOS: 2104.0

Current Graphics Mode: 1366 by 768

* Devices Connected to the Graphics Accelerator *

Active Notebook Displays: 1

 * Built-in Display *

Monitor Name: Generic PnP Monitor

Display Type: Digital

Gamma Value: 2.2

DDC2 Protocol: Supported

Maximum Image Size:

Horizontal: 15.35 inches

Vertical: 08.66 inches

Monitor Supported Modes:

1600 by 900 (60 Hz)

Display Power Management Support:

Standby Mode: Not Supported

Suspend Mode: Not Supported

Active Off Mode: Not Supported

Raw EDID:

00 FF FF FF FF FF FF 00 0D AF 19 17 00 00 00 00

05 13 01 03 80 27 16 78 0A 08 05 9D 58 53 97 29

15 50 54 00 00 00 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01

01 01 01 01 01 01 1C 2A 40 54 61 84 1A 30 30 20

35 00 7E D7 10 00 00 18 00 00 00 FE 00 4E 31 37

33 4F 36 2D 4C 30 32 0A 20 20 00 00 00 FE 00 43

4D 4F 0A 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 00 00 00 FE

00 4E 31 37 33 4F 36 2D 4C 30 32 0A 20 20 00 AD

* Other names and brands are the property of their respective owners. *

Please bear in mind your graphics controller (2nd generation) does not have graphics driver support for Windows 10. Intel supports Windows 10 starting with 3rd generation graphics

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-034343.htm Graphics Drivers — Supported Operating Systems

Allan.
