Unable to update driver for HD Graphics 4400 on Windows 8.1

Hi,

I've just built a new HTPC running Windows 8.1 with a Core i3 4130, using the HD 4400 integrated graphics, and I'm having trouble updating to the latest driver.

When I enter device manager, double click on the Intel HD Graphics 4400 display adapter, and click the Driver tab, it says my driver version is 10.18.10.3960 with a date of 9/29/2014.

I've attempted to update to the latest version, 15.36.7.64.3690, multiple times. I used the .exe installer from the download center, but after installing and rebooting, I go back to Device Manager and it still says my driver version is 10.18.10.3960. I also downloaded the driver as a zip file using the instructions from Robert_U here:

Same result - it still shows that I have version 10.18.10.3960.

Can anyone offer any help?

It's confusing, but you have installed the correct driver already. For reasons best known to someone other than me, the driver version numbers reported in Windows and used by Intel differ like this.

As you can see https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Laptop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=4th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors+with+Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+4400&ProdId=3719&LineId=1101&FamilyId=39 here, though, they're the same version. And the last four digits are always the same for these drivers.

Wow, what a bizarre system. I'd say I feel stupid, but no, I feel like a rational person confronted with an irrational system. Thanks for clearing things up.

Now that I've tried to reinstall the driver 3 or 4 times, I wonder if I've cluttered my system with multiple copies of it...

When you install a driver without uninstalling the previous one it will just override the information so you should not worry about possible multiple copies.

My best recommendation is to uninstall the driver completely from device manager and select the option to delete the software as well and then install the driver again.

The latest driver version is 3960 but the first numbers are the driver base line and packages but if you have the driver 3960 you can be sure it is the latest version.
