DVD Driver not detecting after updating Graphics Driver

So now that my Windows 7 has updated to Windows 8, my DVD driver stopped responding. It doesn't even detect anymore which is weird.

After my laptop decide to update on its own, the "Graphics Driver has stopped responding and recovered" message stopped showing up, but now my DVD driver busted. There's no yellow icon next to DVD/CD driver in Device Manager. The icon for DVD Driver 😧 is still showing up on My Computer, but no detection. It has never happened before until I decided to put in a DVD-Rom and nothing.

Hi azulura, the symptoms do not exactly indicate a software issue; did you try different discs in your drive just to make sure it is not the disc? Was any other software installed recently? What was the last time the drive was working?

Most likely the driver you mentioned was installed via Windows* Update. You may want to try the http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics/ Intel® Driver Update Utility or downloading the drivers from the http://www.intel.com/support/oems.htm system manufacturer's website.

If you need further assistance please provide more information; such as system model and graphics controller model.

I've tried other disc and nothing. I don't normally use my CD/DVD driver and if I did, it's pretty rare. My last use was about 4-6 months ago.

As for the last major update I had was an issue from here:

I updated from Windows 7 to 8, but didn't really solve the problem. So now it's "Windows 8 graphics driver has stopped responding and recovered...."

After Windows Update decided to update automatically, that's when the message stopped, but who knows when it will pop up again.

I went to the Update Utility link, but it shows my driver being up-to-date.

About the message you are getting, try following up in the discussion you linked above.

In regards of the optical drive, there is a big chance these two issues are completely unrelated considering you have not used it for months, which means it could have failed weeks or months ago.

I suggest you taking a look into this possible solution but it is possible the drive's hardware has failed.

Is there a way to fix the driver's hardware if it has failed?

I ran a freeware (CDCheck) and got this from my DVD/CD drive:

error;win32;The device is not ready. (code: 21);D:\

critical;process;File/directory in setup window not found! (code: 2);D:\

critical;process;Process aborted! (code: 3);

Of which I do not understand. Could you please shed some light and maybe a possible advice to fixing.

While there are some steps in the article that are probably meant for advanced users, there are some possible steps you can try:

Test the drive in http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode safe mode.
Try a http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc system refresh.

However, it is possible that the only way to find out if the hardware has failed is to replace this optical drive or test this one in a different computer.

The system manufacturer or a technician from a computer shop can do it for you.
