Resolution grayed out when I plug into projector via VGA

I have intel graphics 3000 HD with Win 7 on a Dell Lattitude. When I plug into a projector, I am not able to change resolution at all. The drop down box with choices is grayed out and it is stuck at 1366x768. I need it at 1024x768.

Any thought why I am losing the ability to change resolution at all?

Is the Multi-monitor configuration set as Clone or to Extended desktop? You may need to set this as extended desktop to be able to use a different resolution on each display. To set this, please use this article:

Furthermore, you may need to adjust the resolution creating your own custom resolution for that device as the projector may not use EDID.

Thanks for the information. Based on the report, your computer is running with an older graphics driver version so please uninstall the current driver in your system. Here you can find instructions to do it:

Once uninstalled, download and install the latest driver here:

If during the installation you get a notification message, that your computer manufacturer does not allow the installation of generic Intel video drives. You are required to install drivers from your computer manufacturer.

You may try to force the installation of Intel generic drivers by performing manual procedure, see here for instructions:

Besides installing the latest driver, I recommend you using direct connection (no adapters) when using the projector. It is also a good idea to look for a firmware update for your device.

Just wondering if a solution was ever found for the originial poster's question. I am experiencing the exact same thing with a projector greying out the resolution settings. I have the updated video driver from Intel. I appreciate any info anyone can add.

I found the problem, and it was NOT the driver. First let me say this Dell would NOT install the Intel "updated" drivers, and it was the most up-to-date available from Dell's website.

Secondly, it was a setting on the projector, although it was set to auto in the aspect settings, it needed to be changed to 4:3 in order to accept any resolution changes.

OK, I have a few Dell laptops. D6410, and D6420. They have Intel HD graphics 3000. When I try to hook up the secondary display port to a vga switcher, the resolution of the secondary port gets locked and greyed out in clone mode. This is not normal behavior. I have many laptops, and all of them let you change the resolution in clone mode. On a normal setup in clone mode, the secondary resolution will follow the primary resolution. Not the case with this graphics adaptor. It gets locked into one resolution that cannot be changed. This is a huge problem for me being an audio visual presenter. I think it might have something to do with the lack of options as far as maintaining aspect ratio/stretch/etc. I have the latest drivers installed. v 9.17.10.3517. Extended mode is not an option, and I need to send specific resolutions. It gets locked at 1366 X 768, which is the highest resolution these laptops can put out to primary. I need to send 3:4 ratio many times.

Hoping there can be a driver fix for this issue.

I downloaded the latest driver from dell, and the one from intel, which appears to be newer (15.28.22.64.3517), but the intel driver does not get installed.

I have win7 64bit. I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling intel 15.28.22.64.3517 now.

Ok, I uninstalled the device and checked the box to delete the old driver files also, and rebooted.

It came up as standard vga adaptor.

Then I installed what is labeled on intel site as v 15.28.22.64.3517, but while it was installing, I could see it was reporting that it was installing v 9.17.10.3517,

which it did. Problem remains. Is this the driver labeled wrong on the intel site? The file is called win64_152822.exe on this page: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProdId=3319 Intel® Download Center .

It is listed as date 4/10/2014, but in device mgr, the date is 3/20/14.

Any help appreciated.

I installed the 64 bit Vista driver (Win64_152820.exe), in win7, and it works properly. Just thought I'd throw that out there if it helps anyone with this problem.

Would be nice to have the right driver working still.

This is just the way the Operating System detects the driver package. It does not affect at all system performance so there is nothing to worry about.

I had the same problem on a Dell Latitude E6520. When I plugged my laptop into a projector, the resolution switched to 1366 x 768, and was greyed out. This was terrible for presenting. In Device Manager, both "Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000" and "NVIDIA NVS 4200M" were listed under Display adapters. I tried updating the drivers for both, to no avail.

I was able to finally resolve it by going into the laptop's BIOS, and under the Video -> Optimus menu, unchecking the "Enable Optimus" checkbox.

Now, just "NVIDIA NVS 4200M" is listed in Device Manager, and when I plug into a projector, I can change the resolution.

Hope this helps others who are having a similar issue.

Another addition to this old post -- just to ensure the message gets out. I had same problem as "frankothemountain" (see his post from Sep 25, 2014 10:25 AM). His problem was with a "vga switch" on his projector. My problem was an old KVM Switch, where you can share a monitor/keyboard/mouse among several machines by clicking a switch. I attached a Dell e6420 to the KVM and it would only use 1366x768 resolution -- no other options were available in Windows or in the Intel Graphics Control Panel. I was using the latest-and-greatest Win 7 64-bit driver from Dell "Video_Driver_XGPWM_WN_9.17.10.3040_A12.EXE". If I attached the monitor directly to the e6420 laptop, it used the optimal 1280x1024 resolution and offered other choices. So there's probably some signal not being passed thru the KVM and frankothemountain's vga switch. Following his suggestion, I uninstalled the Intel driver in Control Panel Driver Manager, downloaded the Intel driver for Win7 / Vista "Win7Vista_64_152254.exe", and double-clicked to install. I shut down the laptop and installed the KVM connection to the monitor. Started and the driver now chooses 1280x1024 by default and offers the other resolutions. There are no apparent side-effects after using it for a couple of hours. Thanks frankothemountain!!
