Will an Alienware Graphics Amplifier work on my laptop? What graphics cards will work best? Thanks.

HP Envy M6-AE151DX:

-Intel Core i5-5200U

-Intel HD Graphics 5500

-12GB DDR3-1600 SODIMM RAM

-1TB 5400rpm HDD

(Got only an HDMI port + USB 3.0 4x)

It seems like there is a special port required for this to work with a laptop.

The Razer Core is too pricey. I went on Amazon and found an akitio with PCIe and thunderbolt 2. Can I just get a TB2 to HDMI cable? There is TB3 version that's more costly. I know Thunderbolt3 is faster than Thunderbolt 2.

No you can't. Your notebook must have a Thunderbolt 2 or 3 connection to get the Akitio Thunder2 to work. HDMI is a multimedia connection (display and audio) and not meant for a data connection, so an adapter cable won't work here.

So basically, the only way to improve my graphics performance is to purchase a another laptop with thunder2/3 or better graphics cards? If so, is there a way to sell my laptop and get a new one? I did upgrade the RAM to 12GB from the 6 original. I hope the sell costs would go up even a little. I would also backup all my data.

Question: How much is the Intel HD Graphics 620 better than this Intel HD Graphics 5500? I know it is integrated so I know it is not a massive performance boost. I'm running GTA 5 at about 25 fps.

If you need more graphics performance the only way is to get a new laptop (either with TB2/3 for external graphics card or a strong built-in card). Maybe the seller of your notebook or HP are running some kind of step-up program (old vs new)... if not you will handle this by yourself.

The HD 620 does have 24 EUs, like the HD 5500, but there are some internal optimizations compared to the old generation and the clock handling is far better. You should be able to scratch the 30 FPS limit.

The HP trade-in program offered a value of less than $100, which I understand. It's probably better to just keep my laptop. I will be using this laptop when I head to college soon. That environment makes upgrading for a new laptop for better graphical performance null and unnecessary. Thank you everyone for helping me with this issue!
