I was trying to hook up my elitebook 840 to a monitor and get the right display resolution. The graphics card is HD graphics 5500. This monitor's optimal resolution is 1680 x 1050. Windows installed it as a "generic pnp monitor" and the optimal resolution is supported.

I searched the web and found a solution is to add customized resolution at 1680 x 1050 with CustomModeApp. But this utility is not found under windows/system32. So I hope to install this utility by installing the full driver package. I downloaded https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downloads/eula/24964/Intel-Iris-Iris-Pro-and-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-8-1-64-bit?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/24964/a08/win64_1563621.exe win64_1563621.exe at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24964/Intel-Iris-Iris-Pro-and-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-8-1-64-bit Intel® Download Center, but it couldn't be installed due to hardware/driver mismatch. Did I get the right driver? If not, which one I should get? Thanks for any help.

My laptop info:

Processor: Intel core i5-5300U

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5500

OS: Windows 7 Enterprise

I was looking for the specifications of your system and some pages from HP* website only mention Intel® HD Graphics 5500 while others also mention AMD Radeon™ R7 M260X. I suggest checking in your own system, in Device Manager or DxDiag report (press Windows* key + R key, type "dxdiag", press OK). It is very possible that your system will need to use customized drivers provided by HP* instead Intel generic drivers.

Besides that, we strongly recommend installing the driver for your monitor, so it will be detected with the correct model rather than "Generic PnP monitor"; and using a straight high quality video cable.

You may want to take a look here:

Thanks Joe. Below is the screenshot of "dxdiag"=>"display". Does this give you more information?

I tried looking for drivers for my monitor. But since it's not a brand name, I couldn't find it. I also copied "CustomModeApp" from an EliteBook G1 to "Windows/system32" of my laptop. But the executable file ran with an error. Are there any other files I should copy together? Thank you.

And one more thing to make it clearer. I don't see "custom resolution" in my graphics control panel. And I also didn't find "CustomModeApp.exe" under "Windows\system32" as instructed by http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-029478.htm Graphics Drivers — Custom Resolutions & Modes.
