Keywords: Swap fstab ram FreeBSD Eli drive label for activating ram mode

Hello fellow Intel community members, I recently had the pleasure to acquire a H10 Optane device, I hope to utilize the onboard 16GB memory with FreebBSD swap as a ram expander for resource heavy updates, however gpart only shows 238 GBs is there anyone that has researched this? Full utilization of the on board memory as a swap partition in Linux is needed for systems with embedded memory. I am running this on a Netgate 2100-MAX that uses pfSense, I have fully configured and utilize squid, clamAV certificated ssl intercept Snort IPS IDS, authenticated NTP, my issue is sometimes it uses swap, again SSD and swap cause issues and run the risk of over use. I am currently using it over usb, yes it won’t access full speed because of usb limitations, again I have a mpcie adapter that is coming that way I can access the 5gbps speeds on the mpcie lane, yes one lane but faster over swapping on an external drive with the NVMe and usb adapter. What must be done once it is running on the pcmie to m.2 adapter to get access to that memory ? Is that automatic? Does the NVMe itself access the ram? The ram is 16GB and my onboard is only 4 so even if it started to use swap I personally do not think it would evert access the SSD and the swap would stay in the Optane ram side volatile memory, versus accessing the SSD. Should I label it like swap? Could that automatically let the NVMe Optane card know it is being used as swap? Is there a way to inform the code that “hey I am a swap partition so do not write to the SSD until absolutely necessary” I am using Eli so even if the power is lost or drive is pulled the drive swap partition is not readable it does not even need to save the memory. What must be done to tell the NVMe to only use ran on the card and to forget the SSD? Can I partition it with a specific label? There has to be a development way and or experimental way to do this … SSD technology is getting to be as fast as ram as it is why not just roll with it and give the option to use it as swap emergency ram …

I have the label swapUSB because it was on a usb adapter before. Now it is over mpcie it sees it as nda0 and no longer da0 great !!! Thanks for everything helping me on this from freebsd to netgate forums. I just want to make sure it is correct.

Goal swap is on the fastest part of the Optane H10 drive. I only want 8GBs because the ram is 4GB

Is there anyway to access that ?
