Xeon X5690 vs Xeon E7-4807

I'm looking at two different HP servers for a MS HyperV implementation. My main concern/question of the proposed servers, are the processors. Server 1 is a ProLiant DL380 G7 with dual, 6-core Intel Xeon X5690 processors, with 72GB RAM/processor. Server 2 is a ProLiant DL580 G7 with quad, 6-core Intel Xeon E7-4807 processors, with 32GB RAM/processor.

All VM's will be hosted on a SAN between the two servers. What would be a better fit for virtualization, x2 6-core CPU's with higher clock, or x4 6-core CPU's with 1/2 the clock? Any advice? Thanks.

You may want to take into consideration the Virtualization support on both processors.

Intel® Xeon Processor X5690 supports Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) and Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) while the Intel(R) Xeon Processor E7-4807 only supports Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x).

Furthermore, the Intel® Xeon Processor X5690 runs at a higher clock speed and supports Intel® Turbo Boost Technology while the Intel(R) Xeon Processor E7-4807 runs at a lower clock speed and does not support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology.

At this point, what will make the difference is which of the processor is the one better meeting your needs according to the software that will be in use; whether Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O is needed or not, and whether you want a processor with a higher speed capability or not.
