I'm working in a Desktop Hardware Inventory Project, and I need identifiers from processor.

The I7-920 processor has core stepping D0, but has this informations too:

Model:26

Family: 6

Stepping: 5

Are the "core stepping = D0" and "stepping=5" the same information? What´s the difference?

Thanks!!

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I'd say there the same thing.

e.g. there is a B0 and D0 i7 920 processor. These are the stepping that you can by from Intel

Hello,

Your question is interesting.

Well, i am not the expert on this.

I guess that the best place to check will be:

http://www.intel.com/software http://www.intel.com/software

http://www.intel.com/opensource/ http://www.intel.com/opensource/

However, i did some more research.

To my understanding, they are not the same thing. I may be wrong. Please check with the software comm.

Core Stepping means:

Throughout the life of a processor life cycle, the processor may go through several steppings or versions. Newer steppings typically have some type of improvement over previous steppings of the processor.

Processor Stepping:

The Processor stepping is a 4-bit value obtained by copying the stepping field of the processor signature returned by CPUID instructions.

This stepping id indicated the revision of the processor family.

Now, why i am saying they are different:

I have used Intel (R) Processor Identification Utility on some different system.

http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/piu/

I can see some CPU with a specific SL number has a certain core stepping C1 and when running this utility, it gives a stepping of 5. So this is completely different.

I have come across this document which is very interesting to understand the CPUID string fully.

http://www.intel.com/assets/pdf/appnote/241618.pdf

All the best,

Kind Regards,

Aryan.
