My http://ark.intel.com/products/42915 i5 750 seems to be stuck on the idle multiplier (9x) instead of the base speed of 2.66 GHz, even while loading using Prime 95

Configuration:

http://ark.intel.com/products/42915 i5 750

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-dp55wb.html DP55WB desktop motherboard.

2GB DDR3 RAM

PSU: Corsair Vx450W

GPU: MSI ATI 5770 HAWK

I have tried disabling all power saving options in the BIOS, and also tried resetting to default settings in the BIOS. Neither helped.

This is a 3 year old machine, out of warranty and hence I an hesitant to update the BIOS. I am not sure when exactly this problem started but it was sometime in the last 2 months after a situation when I had to remove a RAM stick due to a POST issue. (the slot seems to have gone bad)r

Tmaster, I am afraid to say that your motherboard and processors have been out of support since December, 2012

However, you can try testing the system out of the chassis with minimal configuration. (Motherboard, processor, power supply, 1 memory stick and video card) . Then add the hard drive were you have the OS install and check the performance of the CPU.

You could also download the "Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool 64 or 32 bit" . This diagnostic tool checks for brand identification, verifies the processor operating frequency, tests specific processor features, and does a stress test on the processor.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=Processor%20Diagnostics%20Tool https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=Processor%20Diagnostics%20Tool

You can try to remove the CMOS battery and leave the system without it for about an hour. Then put it back on and restart the system.

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-028780.htm?wapkw=clear+cmos+battery# datetime http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-028780.htm?wapkw=clear+cmos+battery# datetime

Thanks Sylvia, I tried the steps you mentioned

The Intel Diagnostic tool ran fine, removing the battery for an hour had no effect either

Is there a way to atleast determine if this is a processor failure or a motherboard failure?

Would you please go to the BIOS and run default settings just to discard if any processor overrides was changed?

Also, which is the current BIOS version on your motherboard?
