VT-X supporting Processor on VT-D supporting Motherboard

Hi Friends,

I want to install E8200 Core 2 Duo processor on Intel DQ45CB Motherboard and make sure that I can enable VT in BIOS.

Both the processor and motherboard support VT, however the terminology used for virtualization feature are different.

Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) for processor and Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) for the motherboard.

I currently have a different motherboard that does not support VT, however my processor does support VT.

I want to purchase this motherboard (DQ45CB ) which supports my existing processor E8200 Core 2 Duo.

I want to install vSphere or Microsoft Windows 2008 Server and use the Hyper-V feature to have virtual machines installed on my desktop.

Can anyone please confirm, if installing a VT-X supporting Processor on VT-D supporting Motherboard and if they are compatible and I get to do what I intend to

Hello Chetankumar Lingegowda,

You may want to first check the software specifications to see if what you need is VT-d or VT-x.

If VT-d is not part of the software requirements, there should be no problem on having a VT-x processor with a VT-d compatible motherboard.

If what the software needs is VT-d, then the processor must have this feature listed as supported.

This is the requirement of Hyper-V for Windows 2008 Server R2:

System requirements

Processor : x64 compatible processor with Intel VT or AMD-V technology enabled.

Hardware Data Execution Prevention (DEP), specifically Intel XD bit (execute disable bit) or AMD NX bit (no execute bit), must be available and enabled.

The only confusion that I had was that, it just mentions VT and I believe that with my current E8200 processor on the DQ45CB motherboard, I should be able to run it without any issues.

I am Smit Shah from India

I want to buy a laptop which supports intel vt-x or AMD-V hardware acceleration as i want to run some softwares which requires intel vt-x or amd-v.

i dont know that either intel vt-x technology is provided in processor or motherboard

So can u guide me that which laptop should i choose to buy ??

Or intel has already provided this technology in every core i3 or core i5 or core i7 ??

Regarding your question, I would like to tell you that all the information given on previous posts is correct.

What I can add to it would be some links with detail information about the VT-x in our products.

In order to use this technology both devices should support this feature, so motherboard and processor needs to be VT-x capable.

So only processor compatible with intel vt-x technology is not enough ??

because here in India most probably we cant find out motherboard model number in the showroom of hp or dell or acer because all the laptops are locked with a password and 95% salesmen person dont know anything about this vt-x technology... I tried once here but they dont know anything about motherboard model number and vt-x

and also by purchasing online through amazon or flipkart we cant know anything about motherboard model number

that's y I asked here

Smit, our best recommendation if you want to build a computer by your own is to find a motherboard based on a Q77 or Q87 Chipset which mostlikely will support Intel® Virtual Technology.

You can search motherboard brands like ASUS, MSI, Gigaby, ECS, BIOStar, ASRock based on these chipsets. Then look for compatible processor supporting Intel® Virtual Technology.

The other option is to look for a branded computer (desktop or laptop) supporting Intel® Virtual Technology from factory.

I'm more than glad to provide you a page where you will be able to find the list of resellers locate at you country.
