Hello, I think I got some problem with my freshly bought CPU 8700k. Its temps at idle moments vary from 40c to 50c. I suspect that it is somehow connected with VID that varies from 1.1V to 1.29V. CPU is installed on ASUS Z370G mobo with MCE enabled, when I disable MCE VID may reach 1.32V. I use corsair h100i for cooling with fans speed 1500rpm at idle and MX-4 for thermal compound. Anything I can do to reduce CPU temps?

Hello konevki90

I understand that the temperature of your Intel® Core™ i7-8700K CPU seems to be higher than usual.

Based on the brief description of your case, the actual temperature of you device at idle is completely normal, considering that the maximum temperature of your device is 100°C.

You can take a look to all your processor's specifications here:

https://ark.intel.com/products/126684/Intel-Core-i7-8700K-Processor-12M-Cache-up-to-4_70-GHz https://ark.intel.com/products/126684/Intel-Core-i7-8700K-Processor-12M-Cache-up-to-4_70-GHz

If you consider that the temperature higher than the one that you are expecting, you can try basic troubleshooting steps such as a BIOS update on your board and other steps mentioned here:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005776/processors.html https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005776/processors.html

As well as an extra step, you can test you CPU with our Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool and let us know if you see any warning or error message, here is the direct download:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

I hope this helps,

Best Regards,

Diego S.

Thanks abunch for your reply. I think I've found a way out of my predicament by replacing MX-4 compound with Grizzly hydronaut (screenshot as a proof). But I still wonder my CPU uses boost for simple web-surfing. MCE option on motherboard is in "auto" state; as I understand its functionality it is used by mobo to provide necessary voltage to CPU for boost and when MCE is disabled CPU makes the decision regarding necessary voltage for boost. As I mentioned earlier when MCE is disabled CPU uses higher voltage for boost than when MCE is auto (and decision is up to mobo). The question is why my CPU does not run on stock speed (3700 MHz) for simple tasks and even when its idle therefore my voltage constantly varies from 1.2 to 1.3 hence temp increase.

Hello konevki90

Thank you for your response.

In this case a reason for CPU not running on stock speeds (3700 MHz) for simple tasks could be an actual energy save feature on the actual OS or board.

I strongly recommend checking the power plans of your OS since somehow it could be set up to "Low" performance as a default, something that you can actually change to "Max" performance through the power plan settings of your OS.

For more information please take a look to this Microsoft* forum:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/advanced-power-settings

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Diego S.
