I've been using XTU for quite a while and now every time I try to upgrade from 6.4.1.19 to the latest version I get a hard lockup just after telling the wizard I do trust the unsigned drivers. I've tried this a few times and this happens every time!

After the crash I can reinstall/repair the version I'm running now without a problem so I'm not doing anything wrong...

All other software is up to date as well on my Core i5 4690K @ 4.7 GHz CPU on it's MSI Z87-G45 Gaming mainboard.

No, just a hard crash.

Windows system and application logs have no pointers either and when I want to run XTU again after rebooting the installer does a bunch of stuff.

Probably repairing the old version because after another reboot I'm back at the previous version.

Is there a way to have more MSI logs or so? I'm just a bit reluctant to try... ;-)

Remove the current Intel Extreme Tuning Utility by using the Add/Remove Program feature in the Window's Control Panel. Then, install a fresh copy of the new version and install it in Safe Mode.

Based on a Microsoft Security Advisory, certain Windows 7 users are at risk of allowing remote code execution during any product installation. To protect systems from this issue, please download and install the security patch KB2533623. More information
about the vulnerability and the patch can be found at https://support.microsoft.com/enus/help/2533623/microsoft-security-advisory-insecure-library-loading-could-allow-remot

I am not familiar with MSI logs.

Amy,

Sorry it took a few days to do some tests but I've tried installing it in safe mode and it's still a no go. I've tried it with the previous XTU still installed and with no XTU present but it all yields into this error:

Applied execute package: XTUInstaller.msi, result: 0x80070643, restart: None

Error code 0x80070643 translates to attempted to install on an unsupported platform but my platform should be supported so someone that packaged the bundle messed up! 😕

https://kallelilja.com/2018/12/workaround-xtu-attempted-to-install-on-an-unsupported-platform/

According to the mentioned page you should be able to run the extracted XTUInstaller.msi with the DISABLEPLATFORMCHECK=1 parameter like so: msiexec /i XTUInstaller.msi DISABLEPLATFORMCHECK=1, or you can also use Orca to change the value in the install file directly.

I've also tried the update in a normal boot but then I skip the installation of the unsigned drivers and after a reboot the Control panel says the latest version is installed and everything works in XTU but it still asks to upgrade because it says it's not the latest version, how about that? The binaries (server and client) are the latest version but maybe because the drivers in C:\Windows were not upgraded it is not happy about the current state?

Regards,

Wim

Seriously Amy?

I should reinstall my OS just to try things out?

That's not going to happen, if my OS and CPU are clearly supported it's not really my fault. If the previous version worked it's not that hard to point out the culprit.

I'd be happy to help you people out in pinpointing the error though!

And there is no computer manufacturer for me out there, I've built my own rig. Besides the Z87-G45 gaming MSI motherboard and the CPU the other components are not that relevant but here you go: https://valid.x86.fr/im5t9w

Regards,

Wim

Did you run the XTU installer as administrator?

Did you try running the XTU installer with the compatibility mode checker?

You can always check with MSI since it's their motherboard.

Yes and no, did not make any difference... As expected.

And the compatibility options are useless, anything other than Windows 7 is an unsupported OS and the rest are GUI related.

Yet again, it's not MSI, it's Intel that's to blame. All previous versions worked. Besides, they use Intel CPU's and chipsets so they'll say to ask you and their right.

Wim

Hi Wimpers: I just received an update on this matter.

It appears that there is a known issue between the Intel® XTU and Windows* 7 that we are investigating.

Just to make sure, did you installed the following Windows* 7 patches?
