Xeon E-2100 Product Family - Supported 128GB ECC RAM Configuration?

What are the supported DDR4 UDIMM module configurations that enable an Intel® Xeon® E-2126G Processor to support 128GB of total ECC RAM?

The Intel® Xeon® processor E-2100 product family originally supported a maximum of 64GB of RAM. Later, support for 128GB of maximum RAM was added.

Per the Intel® Xeon® E-2126G Processor "supplemental information" sub section of the Intel® Xeon® E-2126G Processor product specification page:

"Support for up to 128GB system memory capacity will be available in 2019 and requires both a BIOS update and hardware platform support. Please contact your hardware provider regarding availability for your system."

Page 18 of the processor family datasheet vol 1: "The system memory interface supports two channels of DDR4 memory with a maximum of 2 DIMMs per channel."

Meaning, this CPU family can take 4 sticks of RAM.

Page 19 of the processor family datasheet vol 1 lists numerous supported ECC and non-ECC UDIMM configurations. None of the supported configurations contain a DIMM capacity above 16GB.

The only supported DDR4 UDIMM module configurations total 64GB because there is no DIMM capacity listed greater than 16gb.

What kind of ECC RAM do I need to buy to get 128GB of RAM working with this CPU?

Following the update, do I need to use registered ECC or do I need to use unregistered ECC to get to 128GB?

I tried to open a support ticket with Intel but there is no option to select the "Intel® Xeon® E-2126G Processor" when choosing the product a customer needs support for.

Thanks for your help.

"Intel® Xeon® E-2126G Processor" product specification page:

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/134863/intel-xeon-e-2126g-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-50-ghz.html

Intel® Xeon® processor E-2100 product family datasheet vol1:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/processors/xeon/xeon-e-2100-datasheet-vol-1.html

Intel® Xeon® processor E-2100 product family datasheet vol2

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/processors/xeon/xeon-e-2100-datasheet-vol-2.html

Intel® Xeon® processor E-2100 product family datasheet specification update

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/processors/xeon/xeon-e-2100-specification-update.html

Hello jw000,

Thank you for joining the community

Usually the total RAM supported capacity depends on the actual board you are integrating the processor at. All the available information are general details about feature and such but the final compatibility info depends on the OEM board.
Could you tell what board are you planning to use with this processor?

For Intel boards you could find plenty of compatibility information using the serverconfigurator.intel.com tool, even RAM manufacturers.

Will wait for your information.

Regards.

Hey Jose, I decided to use a Gigabyte C246M-WU4 https://www.gigabyte.com/Server-Motherboard/C246-WU4-rev-10#sp <https://www.gigabyte.com/Server-Motherboard/C246-WU4-rev-10#sp>

Per the specs, that motherboard supports 1Rx8/2Rx8.

The only ECC 2666Mhz unbuffered 32GB DIMMs I can find that meet the CPU specs are made by Samsung part # "M391A4G43MB1-CTD".

However, no vendor sells those DIMMs. Basically, the CPU specs were moved to support RAM that isn't sold anywhere. Sort of a hack to make the processor appear to support more RAM than it really does. I'm just going to use the 64GB of ECC.

Hello jw000,

After doublechecking with our engineering department they suggested the following:
Even though there is a theoretical support by the processor (128GB Max) the limit is set by the board manufacturer based on slots, channels, etc
The information provided on the processor datasheet is theoretical information used by manufacturers for design purposes mainly. So in this case you want to check with Gygabyte for the board RAM compatibility

Hope this helps
