i7-14700k Performance decreased after using default power limit

I was facing thermal throttling at 100 degrees Celsius. Now I've set the power limits to Intel's default: PL1 to 125W, PL2 to 253W, and max current to 400A. The temperature is fine now, during the first 5-6 seconds of rendering, it takes 265W of power and hits 82 degrees. After 5-6 seconds, it drops to 124W and the temperature is only 55 degrees. Here is the first 5 seconds HWinfo result, and here is the HWinfo result after 5 seconds. I don't know is this good or abnormal. another problem is, I can't move my mouse or any windows while rendering using Vray. Also, in Task Manager, I see that the clock speed doesn't go over 4.2GHz. Am I setting it wrong, or is there another setting I should use?

I'm very upset about this issue because other AMD 7500X3D users get much better performance while rendering with only 8 cores. They can even move other windows while rendering—I tested it over RDP. Meanwhile, I'm getting lower performance with 20 cores!

1. Did you experience the reduction in performance only after where you set your board to “Intel Default Settings”?

2. It would really help us if we can get more information about your system. Please download and run our Intel® System Support Utility from this page. To run it, please press "Scan". After the scan is finished, click next and there will be a save button, giving you an option to save the logs to a text file, please do so and attach the file on your reply. You can refer to How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows* for instructions.

3. Please run a stress test using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU). Kindly check the maximum CPU frequency that you are getting.

4. The 4.2 GHZ reading that you got, is it an average of all CPU cores or only for the E-cores?

Hi, sorry for the late response. When I didn't hear back from you for two days after posting, I thought I wouldn't get a response. Anyways, I'm answering all of the questions now.

Yes, I'm experiencing performance issues after setting the default power limits. I'm not sure if PL1/PL2 at 125/253W and 400A is the default or not. I also tried 253/253W, which resulted in temperatures of 85°C with thermal throttling.
I've attached the System Information file here.
Here is the stress test result
I monitored the speed in the Task Manager's performance tab, and it showed 4.2GHz while rendering. However, with the XTU stress test, I see 4.49GHz on the P-Cores and 3.86GHz on the E-Cores.

Additionally, I'm a 3D artist using Autodesk Maya, Vray, Unreal Engine, and Blender as my main software. Could you suggest the best settings so my temperature doesn't go high while rendering and my performance isn't decreased?

After reading your post, here are our suggestions:

1. Please update your BIOS to the latest version, 7E06vH52. It added Intel Default Settings. Kindly set your BIOS to Intel Default Settings. If you need help on how to activate the settings above, please reach out to MSI support.

2. When your PL1/PL2 is set to 253W/253W what was your speed or frequency readings back then?

3. In relation the 2nd question, were you throttling at 85 Degrees Celsius or were you hitting 100 degrees Celsius when you using the aforementioned configuration and that is the reason for your throttling?

Throttling at 85 degrees Celsius is abnormal and there could be something wrong with your motherboard. Please also check with MSI if this is the case.

Thanks for your reply.

1. I haven't updated to the latest BIOS because it is still in beta. If the update is only necessary for Intel default settings, I can apply those settings manually with the current BIOS version. Is updating still necessary?

2. I set PL1/PL2 to 253/253 with a max current of 400A and ran a stress test. It shows 5.5GHz, but in Task Manager, it shows 4.9GHz.

3. Correction: The thermal throttling occurred with the motherboard's default settings at 96 to 100 Degree Celsius. With the recent test at 253/253, there is no thermal throttling, but the max temperature reached 88 Degrees Celsius.

4. I would like to know more about the "Power Limit Throttled" warning shown in the XTU stress test result. What causes this issue, and how can it be fixed?

5. When using PL1/PL2 at 125/253, and run the stress test, the system uses full power for the first few seconds, then drops to normal power with silent fans and a low temperature of 55 degrees. Is this behavior good or problematic? Should I use 125/253 or 253/253, and is a max current of 307A or 400A better?

We appreciate your prompt reply.

Based on the information that you have shared, it seems your CPU is performing up to specifications and normally at 253W/253W. Please see the reasons for it below:

· The temperature that you are getting now at 88 degrees Celsius is normal particularly on a stress test.

· I double-checked the screenshot and you are getting 5.5 GHZ max frequency with P-cores which is consistent with the specifications of your processor found here under Performance-core Max Turbo Frequency setting. The frequency that you are getting in Task manager is average of both P-Cores and E-cores. The E-cores max frequency is 4.3 GHz as shown on the link above also and if you average both max frequencies, it is at 4.9 GHz, which is what you are getting

Here are the answers to your questions:

· Power limit throttling is usually caused by Processor Power Limits PL1/PL2 is set too low in Intel® XTU, The Core Voltage limit is set too low in Intel® XTU and the system doesn’t have sufficient cooling and power delivery. However, in your case you can ignore it, as the settings that you are using are Intel defaults.

· Regarding your question about BIOS update. Intel recommends to use the “Intel Default Settings”, but if you are worried about its beta status, it would be up to you if you want to update to it or not. If you would not update to it, just ensure that the BIOS parameters listed on this page are what you have on your system.

· Regarding your question, 253W/253W is okay; however Intel recommends for you to use ICCMax to 307A.

I am also using cpu 17 14700K (mainboard auros z690M elite)

When rendering in cinebench, Blender, Maya... I also see the temperature rising to 100 degrees (my job is often rendering, so I need the temperature to be reduced to 80 for safety reasons, long-term use, I have Acceptable reduction in CPU performance)

This also makes me very worried about my PC.

I have researched many YouTube channels about how I optimized the i7 14700k, by limiting the voltage for Vcore, but it seems I have failed, sometimes I can't render to check the results of the changes in the bios, sometimes then the engine turns off, freezes...

I tried to find a way to update the bios, but it didn't work, it got a blue screen after updating, so I'm also asking and asking for advice from customer support at gigabyte.

1 - Today I want to ask what parameters should I change in the bios to limit the voltage and temperature of the cpu?

Can you help me list the necessary parameters to change?

I have attached a photo of some of the changed parameters, in which the internal cpu Vcore offset is 0.12 Volt. Is it good to increase or decrease it to check which level is best? How many volts should I increase or decrease each time ( for example 0.125 or just as small as 0.121)

2 - There is a YouTube channel that shows how to change the tube's power limit (160 - 160 likes the second photo).

it doesn't make any sense and I would prefer to limit the voltage and temperature to a safe level below 80 degrees

3 - if i work at "intel Extreme Tuning" software

So what parameters can help me limit the temperature, while still maintaining the same performance? Or if just limiting the application power and temperature will reduce the CPU's performance?
