Hi Gav2415,

Thank you for posting in the community. There are several factors that can affect the speed and performance of your processor. One example is that your processor might not be an unlocked model, meaning you cannot configure its specifications. However, please note that overclocking your processor or enabling XMP in your BIOS might void your processor's warranty.

Moving forward, even though the i5-8500 is not unlocked, you can still utilize its maximum performance thanks to the Turbo Boost feature. Turbo Boost allows your processor to exceed its base speed, depending on the tasks you are running. If you are browsing or using Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), your processor will perform according to those tasks. However, if you are playing CPU-intensive games, rendering, or doing something that requires more power, the CPU will boost its performance, providing higher clock speeds and more cores for you to utilize.

For more information about the Turbo Boost, you might want to check this links:

Overview Information for Intel® Turbo Boost Technology

What Is Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and How Does It Work?

Do tell me if you have other inquiries that I can assist you with.

Best regards,

Dhanniel M.

Intel Customer Support Technician
