I just built a new system and I have a question about my temps with the i7 14700k.

When idle my package temps are 32-35c. When i download something or play a game package temps can range from 75-85c with spikes to 98-100c. Core temps are always 5-10 lower vs the package temps. Is this safe for the cpu or do I need to under volt in the bios?

My case is a corsair 4000d. I have the aio and rear 120mm fan as exhaust with the two front 120mm fans as intake.

System:

Asus z790 Gaming Wifi7

32gb of Ram

Arctic Liquid Freezer iii 240

i7 14700k

Asus RTX 4070 super 12gb

Hi Norman,

All games were causing these spikes.

I ended up installing Intel XTU and setting a voltage offset of .050 and also decreased the clock speed on pcores to 4.5 instead of it turbo boosting to 5.5. This ended up helping my temps keep a consistent 65c-80c on all games even on ultra settings. Still maintaining 100+ fps as well.

Hello JackT,

Thank you for your response! I'm pleased to hear that everything is working fine after the changes. However, I'm curious about the names of the games you're playing, as it's unusual for the system to experience a temperature spike with non-intensive games. Additionally, do you still need any further assistance? Please let me know.

Best regards,

Norman S.

Intel Customer Support Engineer

Hello Norman,

Games that involved these spikes were Starfield, Guild Wars 2 and Diablo IV.

I'm not sure why the 14700k was spiking in temperatures so much. I figured my cooling system was more than enough. I also reset the aio on the cpu to make sure it was fastened on properly / had enough thermal paste. Everything looked good.

I may just have to keep a permanent XTU voltage offset along with the lowering of clock speed to not turbo boost.

Hello JackT,

Thank you for your response. To address the temperature spike and overheating issue, please try the following steps:

1. Reset your BIOS to its default settings.

2. Update your BIOS to the latest version.

3. Run the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool to check the health of your processor.

However, do you still require further assistance? It seems that changing some settings improves the temperature. Please let me know.

Best regards,

Norman S.

Intel Customer Support Engineer
