i5-1345U USB woes

I have an i5-1345U CPU is my Dell laptop. I see USB4 in several locations in the UEFI so I figure that is about all I have with any speed.

The two USB-A ports are USB 3.0 claimed USB3.2 but USB 3.2 is 20 gigabit. The USB-A are marked 5 gigabit in the plastic beside the connector. 5 gigabit is USB 3.0 speed.

Misrepresenting is par the course but given my processor is a U series I figure it had some power limitations holding back the USB speeds.

Given my CPU pretty much is a SOC the machine had two SO-DIMM and a M.2 slot. There is also a socketed WiFi card. I also have a 5G cellular slot so the machine has some ability.

I have some USB-C y-cables and they also run at 5 gigabit telling me that USB speeds are far from USB 4.0 let alone USB 4.2.. It seems USB performance is lagging badly.

My my CPU is low power at 15W until I attacked a 135W PSU and the performance spiked. CPU evidently can use 55W with turbo boost. No wonder the CPU the CPU fan is so big.

I use a lot of USB attached storage as the Dell only has a Ml.2 2230 SSD slot which crimps internal storage a tad.

I installed a UEFI update last Friday so I am figure the UEFI had some issue but I did not find anything too severe.

Unlike older machines Dell allows read access to the UEFI rather than prompt for a password first. My old T14 does this and so does my Dell XPS 15 9570.

My machine has USB 4 and my iPhone 15 Pro has USB-C so I use that for charging Windows claims it could be faster in a USB 3 port. The UEFI on my Dell Latitude 5440 has 7.5W or 15W so I set it to 15W.

I noticed a bunch of Intel updates today suggesting at least somebody is making sure my 13th gen CPU and chipset are as free from BSOD woes as possible.

My machine has a slot for 5G cellular which is definitely not a standard feature. I am considering a 5G carde in addition to upgrading the memory to 64GB so that the performance will be best possible.

The software I use trends to use a lot of memory with excel and some custom programs I have developed

The operating system recognizes the USB 3.0 port as a USB 3.2 Generation due to its backward compatibility. This behavior is influenced by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) setup of the USB version, and results may vary accordingly.

Regarding Intel updates, I can assure you that this segment of mobile devices is not affected by the known issues associated with boxed processors. Based on our analysis of the reported instability issues with Intel® Core™ 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors, Intel has determined that mobile products are not exposed to the same concerns.

USB 3.0 is 5 gigabit

USB 3.1 is 10 gigabit

USB 3.2 is 20 gigabit
