I finally got around to this and it's working again!
Installing the specific firmware linked gave an error on my system, so I ended up just updating everything under Windows. Specifically I used the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to make sure all firmware (wifi, bluetooth) is up-to-date.

Thanks again for your help Scott, this is a big relief <LI-EMOJI id="lia_grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes" title=":grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:"></LI-EMOJI>

Hi there,
Not sure if this is the correct place to ask since I saw ASUS has taken over the BIOS downloads page.

I have a USB disk attached to the USB-C port on my NUC and it used to work just fine, but since I updated to the latest BIOS version (0095) it is no longer recognized.

The drive still works on my laptop and using another cable on a USB-A port, but I really need to use the USB-C port for this.

I'm running a custom Linux version, but I've also confirmed the drive not working using a Ubuntu live image.

I would like to rollback to an older BIOS version to see if the problem persists, although I'm not sure whether this is possible. However I only see the latest version (0095) on the ASUS download page (https://www.asus.com/supportonly/nuc8i5bek/helpdesk_bios/).

For now I'm stuck not able to use my USB disk, how do I solve this problem?
Thanks in advance, Niels

Is the USB-C port just a USB port or is it actually a Thunderbolt port? If the latter, does your Linux implementation have proper, up-to-date Thunderbolt drivers?
Hope this helps,
...S

Thanks for your reply Scott.

The USB-C port is indeed Thunderbolt capable, but I only use it as a regular USB port. This used to work fine under the OS using the older BIOS, but since updating it is no longer working.
Therefore I strongly suspect it's due to the BIOS version and Thunderbolt drivers are not the issue.

I see that there is a firmware update for the Thunderbolt controller in this NUC. Have you updated to it? This is a separate operation to updating the BIOS.

...S

P.S. I attached the package to save you time fighting through the Asus download center.

Thank you very much for the suggestion, this indeed sounds promising!

Seems that I'll have to get a Windows install going first, so that will have to temporarily replace my linux install.
Unfurtunately I'm don't have time at this moment, but I will report back soon.
