Hi Dhanniel,

1. Yes I have updated the bios in December last year which is version 2801.

2. The thermal paste I recently used is "Noctua NT-H2", I could not find the thermal past that I used in November 2022.

3. The PC is on top of the desk in open air, so plenty of airflow. Room temperature is about 18-20c.

4. There has been no major changes, other than new games I installed.

5. I think I run almost everything on default, I do not do any overclocking or mess with settings in the bios. The only thing I have enabled is XMP as the memory was not running on its correct speed. I use "G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-3200C16D-32GVK". But this hasn't changed since I build this PC.

I came across another topic with a very similar issue.

https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/processor-core-i7-13700k-temperatures-are-above-90/m-p/1632085#M77761

It was suggested to run some tests. I have done so and collected the data. Unfortunately I am currently at work and unable to upload these, I will as soon as I get home. Just to verify, these logs don't contain any sensitive information and it is safe to upload here publicly?

thank you in advance.

Intel i7 13700K high temperatures (90-100c)

Good morning,

I have an i7 13700K since November 2022, but in recent months it started overheating. Idle the temps are slightly high, but not extreme (40-50c), but when I start any game or even installing something, the temps shoot up to over 90c, at 100% CPU usage it maxes out at 100c.

I recently changed out my watercooler for an aircooler (i thought the cooler might be broken) and some new thermal paste, as it was over 2 years ago I installed it. But still the same result. The fans go crazy to try and cool the CPU down, but it stays very high. I also have plenty of fans in the case, in the front (3x in), back (2x out) and top (3x out).

Is this normal, or is the CPU about to break?

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix Z790-A GAMING WIFI D4

old cooler: arctic liquid freezer

"new" Cooler: Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH Edition

Hello Sietze,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. Based on your description, it seems that your system's temperatures are higher than expected. Typically, an idle temperature of 40-50°C is considered high, and reaching 90-100°C during gameplay is not normal. To help diagnose the issue, could you please provide answers to the following questions:

Is your current BIOS version 2801? Ensuring your BIOS is up-to-date can sometimes resolve thermal issues.

What type of thermal paste are you currently using? The quality and application of thermal paste can significantly affect cooling performance.

Is your PC located in a warm environment? Ambient temperature can impact your system's cooling efficiency.

Have there been any recent software changes? If so, have you tried reverting to default settings to see if that resolves the issue?

Have you attempted to use the "Load Defaults" option in the BIOS? This can help reset any settings that might be contributing to the overheating.

Best regards,

Dhanniel M.

Intel Customer Support Technician

I have to correct myself, the BIOS was not fully up-to-date.

So I updated the bios now to 2801 and set all settings to default (F5).

Then I re-ran the tests (unfortunately the PC BSOD'ed twice during the stress test, but third time it did the full 5 minutes).
