Power Consumption

Wanted to use NVME Gen 4 so swapped out an i5 10400 with an i5 11500. Now the CPU fan runs near max speed periodically slowing for a few seconds only to spin back up. Both the 10400 & 11500 are 65w processors so why does the 11500 run so much hotter?

What is the complete brand and model of your motherboard?
What is the BIOS version installed on your board?
Are you using the bundled fan of the processor?
What was the temperature readings?

Thanks for the response, it’s an older computer running an Asus Prime B550-plus motherboard.

CPU Fan: Cooler Master i71C Intel, 120mm

BIOS: Version 2001 – Believe it’s the most recent available.

Temps: Sorry don’t have any temps but here’s what the CPU Fan is doing:
i5 10400 CPU Fan speed hovered around 600 rpm
i5 11500 CPU Fan speed runs at 1200 to 1800 rpm

Let me ask additional questions based on your reply.

Are you using the bundled CPU fan or are you using a 3rd party CPU fan?
Does the fan speed always run like that right after the system boots up or there are certain application that started to speed up the fan?
You may check the temperature reading inside the BIOS.
Was it working fine before?
If yes, what was the last change made in the system before the issue started?
What are the troubleshooting steps that you tried so far?

You can adjust the fan speed in bios if option is available.
