does ddr3 ram damage/destroy skylake processors?

I've heard that ddr3 causes skylake processors to burnout due to the voltage, is this the case?

Skylake supports only low-voltage 1.35V DDR3. Regular DDR (1.5V) may damage CPU. But memory initialization is always on side of mainboard, i.e. motherboard vendor is responsible for checking RAM and blocking system start in case of incompatibility. Actually, i seen no died CPUs because of RAM overvoltage, but dead MBs from such kind of mistakes - alot.

Hi asdfghjkl1234,

Skylake processors support DDR3 memories with low voltage 1.35v, conventional memories work at 1.5v.

The new generation of processors is ready to prepare DDR4 - 1866 / 2133MHz at 1.25v and DDR3L-1333 / 1600 at 1.35V.

Conventional memories overheat the processor and motherboard and they could damage your system sooner or later.

Is it true that the damage will occur even with 1.5v DDR3 for RAM on the Motherboard vendor's QVL and support list?

Contains heaps of 1.5v RAM on that list for the ga-b150m-d3h skylake board.

I have some GSkill F3-1600C9D-16GXM lying around that I would like to repurpose in a simple power-efficient office build and was intending to combine it with a G4400T and the above board.

Hi john.k,

The memory controller is inside the processor and it supports DDR4 - 1866 / 2133MHz at 1.25v and DDR3L-1333 / 1600 at 1.35V. Memories with higher voltage overheat the cpu and it might fail sooner or later.

I got a different list of compatible memories from Gigabyte website.

Hi Mike,

That's a different board.

Gigabyte have 2 boards of the same name for many of their models, one supporting DDR3 and one supporting DDR4.

The model numbers are the same except it has the DDR3 suffix. Same with Asus with their D3 suffix.

Both companies seem to have lots of the 1.5v DDR3 (non-L) on the compatibility list of DDR3 variants.

I suggest you to confirm Gigabyte's information with their customer support. Skylake processors supports DDR3L - 1333 / 1600 at 1.35V and DDR4 - 1866 / 2133MHz at 1.25v; any other memory might damage or decrease processor performance.
