I am contacting you regarding a Gigabyte Z890 AERO G motherboard on which I have set up a RAID 1 array with two NVMe SSDs using Intel VMD / Intel RST.

The RAID volume is detected correctly and Windows 11 LTSC boots up fine from it. In Device Manager, the Intel controllers are clearly listed:

Intel RST VMD Controller AD0B
Intel RST VMD Managed Controller 09AB
Driver: 20.2.6.1025
The RstMwService.exe file is also present in version 20.2.6.1025.
However, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology / Intel Optane Memory and Storage Management application consistently displays the error: 0xA00906B3

The Intel(R) Storage Middleware Service / RstMwService is set to start automatically, but it does not remain running. The Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Mail Service also fails as it depends on the Middleware service.

I have already tried:
reinstalling the Intel IRST driver provided on the Gigabyte support page;
installing the Intel application via the Microsoft Store;
checking the VMD/RAID BIOS settings;
checking the driver/service versions.

Could you please advise on the recommended procedure to ensure the Intel RST monitoring tool works correctly on Windows 11 LTSC, or confirm whether there is a known incompatibility with this version of Windows?

If this is not possible, is there a solution—even via the command line—to check the RAID status to determine whether it is rebuilding or in degraded mode, the aim being to obtain basic RAID information?

Hello Francois44-NTS,

I hope you are doing well.

Thank you for your update. I completely understand, and please feel free to carry out the requested tests at your convenience. I appreciate you keeping me informed.

In the meantime, for your reference, I am sharing the troubleshooting steps below that you may perform:

As a first step, kindly reboot your system and check if there are any changes in the application behavior.

If the issue persists, please follow the steps below:

Restart the Service RstMwRpc:

Search for the Services Windows app (Open Windows Menu and type services).

Select the Services app.

Press Yes if the User Account Control popup appears.

Restart the service by following the steps below:

Locate the RstMwRpc service.

Right-click and select Restart from the menu.

If error persists, Disable acceleration and uninstall the application.

After restart, reinstall the application and enable acceleration.

For reference, please review the support article below, which addresses this specific error:

Error Code 0xA00906B3 - Intel® RST Service Disruption

If the issue still persists after performing the above steps, we kindly request you to share the Intel System Support Utility (SSU) logs for further analysis.

You can download the SSU tool here:

How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

Note: While generating the SSU report, please ensure that the “Networking” option is unchecked.

e are experiencing an issue with Intel RST on a Windows 11 LTSC PC equipped with a Gigabyte Z890 AERO G motherboard.

The configuration is as follows:

A RAID array of 2 NVMe SSDs managed by the motherboard via Intel VMD / Intel RST
A separate RAID array managed by a Broadcom MegaRAID 9460-8i PCIe card

The issue observed is as follows:
the Intel RST application does not launch correctly when the MegaRAID 9460-8i card driver is active.

However, if we disable the PCIe RAID card driver in Windows Device Manager, Intel RST launches normally.

The RADI card is in the first PCIe slot on the motherboard
The two NVMe drives are in the first NVMe ports on the motherboard

The aim is to have the PCIe bus connected directly to the CPU (which the motherboard allows, see Gigabyte documentation)

We have also tried the following BIOS modification:

Map RP BDF 0/6/1 Under VMD → Disabled
Map RP BDF 0/1/0 Under VMD → Enabled

But the problem persists. Since making this change, an additional device appears in Windows:
‘Standard NVM Express Controller’.

We have also reversed these settings
Map RP BDF 0/6/1 Under VMD → Enabled
Map RP BDF 0/1/0 Under VMD → Disabled

Can you confirm whether there is a known conflict between Intel RST/VMD and third-party PCIe RAID controllers such as the MegaRAID 9460-8i?

Could you also advise us on the recommended BIOS setting or Intel RST driver version for this configuration?

Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Hello Francois44-NTS,

I hope you are doing well.

Thank you for reaching out and for providing such a detailed description of your system configuration and the behavior observed. We truly appreciate the time and effort you’ve taken to document the issue and the troubleshooting steps already performed.

I understand the concern regarding the interaction between Intel® RST/VMD and the third-party RAID controller in your setup. Please allow me some time to review the information you’ve shared and analyze this further. I will get back to you with an update and the next steps as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best regards,

CM

Intel Customer Support Technician

Hello,

Following your recommendation, we finally found an option called **“Above 4GB MMIO BIOS assignment”** in the BIOS of the **Gigabyte Z890 AERO G** motherboard.
We changed this setting, thinking it was the equivalent of the **“Above 4G Decoding”** option you had recommended.

Since making these BIOS changes, the system no longer boots correctly in Windows and displays an **INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE** error.

As a reminder, the configuration is as follows:

* Motherboard: **Gigabyte Z890 AERO G**
* OS: **Windows 11 LTSC**
* System RAID: **RAID 1 of two Kingston NVMe SSDs**, managed by **Intel VMD / Intel RST**
* Additional PCIe RAID card: **Broadcom MegaRAID 9460-8i**

The **MegaRAID 9460-8i** card has now been physically removed from the PC in order to isolate the problem.

The current VMD configuration is:

* **VMD Controller**: Enabled
* **Enable VMD Global Mapping**: Disabled
* **Map PP BDF 0/1/0 Under VMD**: Enabled
* **Map PP BDF 0/6/1 Under VMD**: Enabled
* **Map PCH SATA Controller Under VMD**: Disabled

The RAID 1 volume is clearly visible in the Intel RST BIOS. It appears as:

* **RAID 1 / Mirror**
* **Bootable: Yes**
* **Status: Rebuilding**

However, the Intel RAID has remained in **Rebuilding** status for over 12 hours, which seems unusual to us for two NVMe SSDs of approximately 1 TB. Windows still won’t boot and displays **INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE**.

Can you confirm:

Is “Above 4GB MMIO BIOS assignment” the same as “Above 4G Decoding” on this motherboard?
Is the VMD configuration shown above correct for a RAID 1 NVMe system?
Could installing the Intel RST driver/software cause a change in the boot driver, resulting in an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error?
What procedure do you recommend to restore Windows boot without deleting or recreating the RAID volume?
Why might the Intel RAID remain stuck in Rebuilding for more than 12 hours?
Is there a known incompatibility between Intel VMD/RST on this motherboard and a Broadcom MegaRAID 9460-8i PCIe RAID card?

We wish to avoid any destructive actions, in particular deleting the RAID volume, resetting the drives to non-RAID mode or recreating the volume.

Hello,

We managed to repair the Windows boot and rebuilding RAID issue (mentioned in the previous message).

However, we are still facing the same issue.
When the MegaRAID 9460-8i card is installed in the PC, the “Intel RST” software cannot be launched; it appears to conflict with the card. If the MegaRAID card is removed, the application launches.

The RstMwService service fails to start (START_PENDING for 30 seconds, then STOPPED). However, if the MegaRAID card is not present, the RstMwService service changes to RUNNING (same symptoms as for the RST application).
Manually starting the RstMwService service does not work either.

And regarding the advice to “Disable acceleration,” could you clarify which acceleration should be disabled?

Thank you in advance,
