Do I really need to have the RST software running to take advantage of it?

I was thinking of disabling the software using AVG's tuneup tool since it (says) it causes a high load on the system but I fear I might loose RST's benefits.

Do I really need to have it running or is simply the fact that it's installed enough to somewhat help speed up my PC? I don't see anything in it except just giving info and enabling/disabling Link Power management.

I'm using a Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD as a boot drive and a WD Blue 1TB 2.5" drive as a secondary. Yeah, it's a laptop

You could uninstall Intel® Rapid Storage since Windows will keep one file called iastor.sys and this will control AHCI or RAID modes on your system. If you remove the software, that should be fine.

Oh cool. I thought removing the software would also remove that exact driver.

Yes, that's correct, the driver remains after uninstalling the software.
