Problems with s5000psl

Hello everybody.

I have the next hardware:

- AX 1200w Corsair

- 8 modules gb ram.

- 2 xeon socket lga 771

- dvd rom

- 320 GB seagate

- LSI 8888 raid card

Well, I set up all of the them in the box.

First time, when I switch on the corsair, the pc runs withouth push any button and then stop.

Next time, I disconnect the LSI card, and only put one module ram of 2 GB in bank A (colour blue), and switch on the pc.

Don´t appear nothing on screen, and I record a video with my mobile, showing next Bios color theme:

A: Bit 3 led RED

B: LSB led GREEN

C: Bit 2 led OFF

D: MSB led OFF

What could be the error? I don´t know what is it...

I have another two doubts:

If i only put one module ram, the light of that bank must appear green no?

and if i have put two sockets, each other has his correspondence green light no?

What kind of memory are you using? And which processor are you using? The POST LEDs you provided, are they in the correct order? It should be MSB, Bit 2, Bit 1, LSB. Also check the PBA# of your board.

The LEDs of memory slots are red only, and they only light when memory error is detected.

First of all, thanks so much for answer.

The processors I don´t know the model exactly but they are Xeon match pair (they come with the motherboard)

Well. The model of the memories is:

DDR2 667 MHZ FB-DIMMM

4 modules of 2 GB each other

What is the PBA of my board? How can I check it?

on page 9, the leds are in the order I told, but in the page 12 change.

I tell you as appear on page 12:

MSB LED : off

Bit 2 LED: off

Bit 1 LED: red

LSB LED: green

The NIC led are green too.

+5-volt standby LED also appeared on green.

Status Led green too

I don´t have more leds lighting..

PBA number is printed on a small label on your board. See http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/CS-031176.htm# q3 AA, TA, SA or PBA numbers. The reason I'm asking for PBA# is that certain CPUs are only supported on certain PBA revisions. For same reason I asked for CPU model. See http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-023585.htm Important information on support of Intel® Xeon® Processor 5300 and http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-028540.htm Intel® Xeon® Processors 5400 and 5200 support.

The POST code LED translates to 0x21h: Initializing a chipset component. It's pretty early state during POST, before memory initialization. It would be very helpful if you can get the brand/model of your DIMMs and check if it's in the http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000psl/sb/CS-022924.htm Tested memory list.

After checking the components compatibility, try one CPU in socket 1, and one DIMM in slot A1 first.

Well, Here is all the information you asked:

- The memory brand is QIMONDA. 2 GB 2Rx4 PC2 5300. DDR2 667 MHZ, FB-DIMM [4 MODULES of 2 GB]

In the ebay announce, they marked as compatible with s5000psl, s5000pal, s5000phb, s5000vcl.

The PBA# is: D44771-804

and the exact model of the cpus is:

Quad Core E5310. 1.6 ghz/8 MB cache

With a module ram in A1 Bank and cpu 1 in B, appears on screen Bios.

I also put in the same socket the another cpu, and goes ok

I´m inside the Bios and the version is:

1.17.1057.

I also have two cpus:

L5420

INTEL XEON

SLARP COSTA RICA

2.50 GHZ/ 12 MB / 1333

381****** and the other one has 382*****

Are they matched pair or not?

Your board doesn't support Xeon 5400 series processors. E5310 should be OK. Where did you get the BIOS version? The complete BIOS string should start with S5000.86B. Ok, they don´t compatible.

So, for being compatible with L5420, what PBA# must appear on the MOBO?

The Bios.. I wrong the version.. I will check later.

Another question..

For update the bios.. Have I only put one cpu, or i can try with the two cpus?

At the moment I have two cpus and the 4 modules ram at A,B,C,D DIMM Banks and the MOBO recognizes all of them.

See http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-028540.htm Intel® Xeon® Processors 5400 and 5200 support, as those CPUs has different power requirements, althought the socket is the same.

If you can boot the system already, yes you can update the BIOS with all those components installed.

As for the fan heatsink, both links you provided are same model (D39267-002), and it's goof for Xeon 5xxx series up to 120W.

E11027-302

E11025-302

Those will be compatible with my L5420 no?

I see one Mobo on EBAY that has E11027-101, that one isn´t compatible with L5420 no?

I don´t understand one thing...

Apart of being both SLARP/SLBBR, they must have the same batch or it´s not important for being matched pair?

Yes PBA# starts with "E" can support L5420. Difference between SLARP and SLBBR is stepping. Normally mixing CPUs with +/- 1 stepping is OK, but remember to install the lower stepping in socket 1.

I think I don´t explain as clearly as I waited..

My those L5420 cpus are SLARP, but they don´t have the same batch number.

For being "MATCHED PAIR", what are the features that they must have?

- Same SLARP + Same batch number

- Same SLARP only.

Batch number doesn't matter. What matters is stepping. Same sSpec# means same stepping, so processors with same sSpec# would definitely be OK.

As I said earlier, +/- one stepping is normally also acceptable. So you can mix SLARP and SLBBR. It's recommended to populate the CPU with lower stepping in slot 1, so SLARP goes to CPU slot 1, and SLBBR goes to slot 2 if you mix them.
