S5000PSL IPMI, how to access and configure

Hello All;

Just now got my replacement Motherboard in, and it works!! YEAH!!

OK, so the question is this.

How do you setup and configure IPMI on this board?

I am in the BIOS, and for what I have read, it states that it would be in the [Advanced] Tab of the BIOS.

However, I am not seeing it.

BIOS

Version: S5000.86B.15.00.0101

Build Date: 11/09/2010

Doing a Google search, there are people that are using it. So, how do you access it?

I was able to find the configuration utility http://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/g88217001_syscfg_userguide_rev04.pdf User's Guide for this end of interactive support board.

You should find everything you need to use IPMI on this document. Let us know if you need anything else.

I did a search for IPMI

And I came up with "Page 8"

And it states that I need to download and install through USB the SYSCFG

I believe it is found here.

Would that be the file I need to download?

And, would I then be able to run the script that is shows here.

B. UEFI

a. Unzip syscfg utility zip file to a USB pen drive, boot into EFI and change folder to

\UEFI_64 which contains:

ipmi.efi

NShell.efi

syscfg.efi

b. Run 'syscfg' commands from the location where the files are copied.

After this, would that give me access to the IPMI in the BIOS? I am hoping, that is a yes.

I am going to check my MB now, to make sure that the jumpers are in the right place.

I was able to find the utility in the unzipped folder from this download.

So, I am assuming that I will need to do one of the 2.

Installing win2k8 server, and run the install.bat located in the following directory.

S5000_Windows\Windows_SYSCFG_V501_B23\InstallationEM64T

OR Win2k3 Server and do this one.

S5000_Windows\Windows_SYSCFG_V501_B23\InstallationIA32

OR USB (Maybe)

I can download the LINUX LIVE USB, and install the SUSE Linux version

I have 3 options.

I will download the www.linuxliveusb.com

After a good sleep, I will look in on doing one of them.

If someone has some information on this, that would be really great.

I would love to not go into this blind, so I am documenting everything that I do.

Not only to help me out, but to let the community now what has been done in order to accomplish what is needed to get this running.

Alright then, give it a try with Linux, there is no need to configure anything in bios since the LAN line should be already configured by default. Once you are in Linux you can install the repositories open a terminal windows and start sending commands like the ones in the http://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/syscfg_e1245812.pdf User's Guide.

I am having a rough time getting the stuff installed

It took nearly 12 hours of testing different Linux USB LIVE to get one that worked. (centOS LIVEKDE)

And I am getting errors while trying to install the components.

So. I was reading through the

Intel OFU User Guide

And I found out about the "Intel Deployment Assistant"

Enable Serial Over LAN This option allows you enable BMC serial over LAN (SOL). Serial Over LAN provides a mechanism that enables the serial controller of a managed system to be redirected over an IPMI session over IP. This enables remote console applications to provide access to text-based interfaces for BIOS, utilities, operating systems, and applications while simultaneously providing access to IPMI platform management functions. You also need to enable Console Redirection in Intel server BIOS configuration.

It looks like this might do it???

I got an access error while trying to run it earlier.

I believe it had something to do with the BIOS being password protected.

I took the CMOS battery out, and will put it back in and try it again.

But, for what I have see so far, this tool will do everything that I need.

The Deployment Assistant loads.

Then I get a screen that shows:

Error: Unable to access the boot device.

I was thinking that it could not read the BIOS, so I removed the CMOS battery and replaced it this morning.

However, that does not seem to be the issue.

It looks like it is unable to read from the USB drive, however it was able to load the startup screen for the Deployment Assistant.

And it showed the files loading.

I have searched and have not found any information that is helpful in this issue.

I have created the USB drive 2 times with 2 different settings. (Using Rufus)

And they both give me the same error message.

I did some research and I was not able to find any previous version on the website that we could try to isolate if the issue is with the software version.

I wanted to see if we could reproduce this issue in our end; however, I no longer have the product at hand as it was discontinued quite some time ago.

I'll be looking forward to alternative solutions; however, I am uncertain how soon I can achieve that.

If you run into any solution for this we would appreciate if you can share the knowledge to help other community users.

Definitely not what I was wanting to hear, as it seems to be what I have read from everyone's threads on here.

Is, that it is an older model board, and no one is able to test on their end.

The only other option that I have, is just to install Windows 2008 server onto the spare drive

And then try to install the updates to the BIOS from there.

If I can find a way to run the Deployment Assistant.

OK.

I installed Windows 2008 R2 Server.

I was able to get the drivers installed.

I installed all 3 sets.

Windows_SYSCFG_V501_B23

Windows_SELVIEWER_V201_B1

Windows_OFU970_B4 (This was the last one, as all the other drivers had to be installed first)

Now. What do I do next?

Boot into EFI and none of the commands with "SYSCFG" that I use work.

Everything is: not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I CDed into the USB drive, and I have no idea how to do what it says to do.

Update:

With what I have done (from the above post)

When the system boots, I get a different boot screen.

F2 = Enter BIOS

Esc = Diagnostics Messages (This is new)

F12 = Network Boot

Inside of the BIOS, I have a new Tab. [Boot Manager]

I still do not have the options that I need inside of the [Advanced] Tab.

Still working on it.

Also.

I created a Bootable CD and tried to use the "Deployment Assistant"

But, it gave the same error message:

Error: Unable to access the boot device.

What would be causing this?

Could someone please let me know exactly HOW to install the IPMI from EFI

If I can do it that way, then all will be good.

I just want this done.

Please, anyone.

There has to be someone in Intel that can tell me.

It would be GREAT, if the person that wrote the instructions, would have actually written "Instructions" instead of what they wrote, as they are worthless.

Everything that I have done so far, is from trial and error.

And I DO NOT want to brick the BIOS, because of not having the correct information.

I am in Win2k8 Server.

I have run a cmd to the folder

SysCfg\SysCfgRelease

From there, I am able to run.

syscfg.exe /

Along with whatever command that needs to be run.

I just need to find out what commands need to be run to enable the IPMI Tool into the BIOS

Slowly getting there.

This is what I have done so far.

Setup both IP Addresses on the board for the NICs.
Set the gateways for both NICs. (And I can ping both IP Addresses with 0% loss.)
Setup a user
Set up Email Alerts
And several other items.

I tried to access the server through a web page through either IP address and the page does not load.

So, it is still a work in progress.

Once I can successfully get this running, and I document all of it, so others can have the information.
