we have been using the 3.16Ghz x5460 cpu and are being told that the x5570 nehalem 2.93Ghz will be replacing it and is light years ahead in performance ...

we barely use all the power a 3.16GHz x5460 offers - what IS the exact replacement for the x5460 with the x5500 series - i am thinking it could be as low as the x5530at 2.4Ghz - Any help would be appreciated... The cost of the high end CPU is just too expensive

Hi there,

Hi there,

Here are some information for you. From this, you can start your small research.

Nehalem:

4 cores, 8 threads

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology

Turbo Mode

Channels DDR3 Memory*

Intel® Quick Path interconnect

45 nm

LGA Package: 1366 (does not work on Bensley Board 5000chipset)

The class of CPU is divided into different categories depending on your usage.

Performance:

X5570, X5560, X5550

Volume:

E5540, E5530, E5520

Value:

E5506, E5504, E5502

Workstation:

W5580

Even choosing memory also depends on various factors:

- Maximum Bandwidth

- Balanced Performance

- Maximum Capacity

• Nehalem / Tylersburg supports 3 DIMM types:

1. Registered DIMMs (RDIMM)
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 72pt; mso-list: l0 l...

Hello,

You're tight in that the Xeon® 5500 processors deliver a huge performance boost over existing Xeon® 5400 CPUs, but it's a tough question to answer without knowing how your systems are being deployed - i.e. how many number of servers (or workstations?), applications, datacenter or workgroup server, etc?

As mentioned in the previous post, there are three main types of Xeon 5500 series processors available that differ in features such as CPU cache, Hyper-Threading, Turbo Boost, QuickPath Interconnect speeds, and memory speed. Overall, we've seen that higher-end CPUs typically deliver higher ROI over time, but it again depends a lot of how you'll be using them - multi-threaded apps? bandwidth-intensive? virtualized?

Let me know!

Thanks...Ed
