Hi Jarikus! Windows 8 will be okay, but a 4th Generation CPU is needed. This year though, 250 entrants from across the categories in the Pioneer track and 50 from the Ambassador track will receive a 4th Generation NUC mini-PC as well as the camera, so you might want to see if you can win one of those with your idea and that would solve your hardware problem!

Will the Real Sense SDK work

Will the Real Sense SDK work with a Z97 Express chipset with the SDK camera plugged into a USB 3.0 connector, and a keyboard and mouse plugged into 2 of the USB 2.0 connectors? I ask because I've read on a different forum that someone was having trouble with USB 2.0 devices being routed to the USB 3.0 controller. Are there 2 separate USB controllers - one for USB 2.0 and one for USB 3.0 - in the Z97 chipset?

I'm hoping the problem reported was a driver issue.

Thanks, Jack

P.S. I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting a Gigabyte Mini-ITX GA-Z97N-WIFI motherboard that only has 1 PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16, which will already be occupied -- I wouldn't be able to add a USB 3.0 card, if the integrated controller does not work.

P.S. The xHCI controller issue was raised in the following forum: https://communities.intel.com/thread/54909?start=0&tstart=0

You need to have a USB 3.0 connection for the RS Camera and for SDK beta you should connect it directly to a USB 3.0 port (i.e. not through a USB hub etc).

Pubudu,

Thanks for replying.

I'm aware that I can't plug a RS Camera into a USB 3.0 port that is connected to a hub. I'm not suggesting that I would do that. The mobo that I'm looking at has a Z97 chipset, which has integrated USB controllers -- presumably 1 for USB 3.0 and 1 for USB 2.0.

I would plug the camera in 1 USB 3.0 connector and a keyboard and mouse in 2 USB 2.0 connectors.

Will this configuration work? (Presumably there will be only 1 device connected to the USB 3.0 controller,)

The board manufacture does not know and suggested that I contact Intel regarding the Z97 chipset.

The mobo does not have an extra slot for installing a USB 3.0 card with a dedicated controller.

My understanding is that the Z97 chipset uses a xHCI controller to route requests to the appropriate USB controller. If it routes USB 2.0 device requests to the USB 2.0 controller and USB 3.0 requests to the USB 3.0 controller, then my configuration compiles with the requirement that a dedicated USB 3.0 controller be used for the RS Camera.

If my configuration will not work, then you seem to be saying that the integrated Intel USB 3.0 controller in the Z97 chipset will not work with the Intel RS Camera. Is this correct? Has anyone tested the RS camera with the Z97 chipset?

Regards,

It is very hard to comment on third party compatibility without knowing the specifics of their architecture. If the USB 3.0 interface you are referring to is truly a independent interface it should work with RS Camera.

I have two laptops. One has a processor i5-3210M (Ivy Bridge); another has i7-4700HQ (Haswell). Both laptops have Windows 8 x64, Visual Studio 2013, and Intel RealSense SDK. Only integrated non-3D webcams are present on the laptops.

I tried to run some samples of the RealSense SDK (emotion_viewer, face_tracking, hands_viewer and others). On both laptops, I get same result. Some samples work properly (for example, emotion_viewer), and some (for example, hands_viewer) aren't.

Intel Core i5-3210M is a 3rd generation Core processor (it does not based on Haswell), but samples worked the same way on both laptops. It's not corresponding with the declared system requirements. Or have I missed some important detail?

Viktor,

With the built in normal web cam, samples that require depth cam input won't work. As it is stated in RealSense website and in installation, you need an Intel RealSense Camera to use most of the SDK features. So without that cam you are yet to experience the full power of the SDK.

While some of the features will work with older processors, it is only with an Intel 4th generation (Haswell) processor or above, we can guarantee the best possible performance and smooth operation of SDK algorithms

Viktor,

The emotion_viewer sample uses PXCMSenseManager module EnableEmotion, but the hands_viewer sample uses the EnableHand module.

Apparently the EnableEmotion module only needs an RBG camera, while EnableHand needs the RealSense camera. That is why the former succeeds, while the latter fails to initialize the camera.

As PUBUDU mentioned, Haswell supports new instructions, e.g. AVX2, gather, and FMA3, that are used to improve the performance of the SDK. The EnableEmotion module either doesn't use any of these new instructions or has a workaround when they don't exist.

Even if the SDK can detect non-Haswell processors and degrade gracefully, it is probably best to develop on a Haswell, since systems with embedded RealSense cameras will have Haswell or later processors.

Regards,

You can still get the depth, color, and IR streams, and the core SDK with other processors and OSs.

For example, I was able to get frames from the camera using RealSense SDK even on an Intel Atom Z3775 under Win8.1 32 bits.
