RealSense 3D camera compatibility

Hi,

I have a computer with Intel Celeron 847 CPU and high speed USB hub (USB 2.0). Can I use the SDK and the RealSense 3D Camera on my system optimally?

The RealSense 3D Camera requires a dedicated USB 3.0. controller, but I'm not sure whether it will work with just any USB 3.0 controller; it probably needs a GEN 2 for bandwidth performance. Probably an Intel based controller will work! :)

I ran into a similar issue with the Kinect V2 for Windows: The device would not work with a high performance motherboard that had an earlier version of USB 3.0 and I had to buy a USB 3.0 card. Not just any card, however! It turned out that the device would work with Intel or Renesas USB 3.0 GEN 2 controllers. However, the ASMedia USB 3.0 controller on a ASUS P9X79 DELUXE and some other controllers would not work. I bought a SIIG JU-P20612-S1 with SATA power, plugged it into a PCIe Gen 2.0 x4 slot (x1 would not work) and used only one port.

So, I'm in the market for a new build. I suspect that motherboards with imbedded Intel USB 3.0 controllers will work, e.g. those using the X97 chipset. I'm trying to get confirmation (if possible) and will post my findings.

Thanks for sharing the details of your experiments with different motherboards and USB controller devices. It's helpful and a little disappointing to know so much investment and searching around is required to work with this 3D camera. I am now having second thoughts about participating int the Intel RealSense App Challenge 2014.

I believe NUC is Next Unity of Computing. Quick search on the Internet finds several South Asian sources for the NUC with 4th generation core processor. There are also other systems which meet the specifications (with 4th generation Intel core i7 or i5 and USB 3.0).

Please don't give up!

The compatibility issue is not the camera's fault - USB 3.0 has evolved and some of the earlier products have compatibility issues with high bandwidth devices.

I think if you use a recent motherboard or card that uses an integrated USB 3.0 controller from Intel, you'll be ok. For example, the Kinect V2 works with the first surface pro released in June 2012. It also works with surface pro 2 and 3.

And, I just confirmed that the Kinect V2 works with a Z97 based motherboard from ASUS - the Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1. This motherboard has 2 USB 3.0 controllers - an ASMedia USB 3.0 controller and an Intel USB 3.0 controller. The ASMedia controller does not work but the Intel controller does.

I also know of a developer who is happily using a Gigabyte Z97 motherboard with the Kinect V2. Again, this motherboard has an Intel USB 3.0 controller.

So, as Colleen suggested, systems with 4th generation Intel core i7 or i5 and USB 3.0 should work.

Although other controllers might also work, to be safe, I'd suggest checking that the device manager says "Intel(R) USB extensible Host Controller."

having problems with at least two of the exe files in the sdk

upon start I get the message "Init Failed"
most of the others including emotion and face tracker work

is this compatible with

That camera Creative Senz3D is only compatible with the previous Intel Perceptual Computing 2013 SDK.

For the 2014 RealSense SDK you need to use the Intel (Creative) RealSense F200 camera.

Does Renesas chipset USB 3.0 work with intel realsense camera? Did you get any issues with that?

I bought a USB 3.0 expansion card for a desktop PC at the end of last year that had a Renesas chipset and the RealSense camera worked with it.
