Virtual machine

Hi all,

I have access to a computer with a 4th generation Intel processor but cannot run Windows on it(its a Mac). I cannot bootcamp it either. I tried installing the SDK under a virtual machine using Virtual Box, but the software did not seem to recognize the camera once it was plugged in. I did set up the settings so that the VM would recognize the camera as being plugged in and Windows did recognize it, but the sample SDK programs, as well as the installer, failed to detect the camera. Please help! I cannot just go and buy a new machine..

Back on November 26, 2014, Konstantin (Intel) responded to a similar query as follows:

"RealSense 3D camera requires USB3 port to function properly. Right now VirtualBox doesn't support USB3 port mapping to guest OS.

You can try using VMWare since they claim USB3 support, but it could be slow and you may not get high resolution streaming on virtual box.

Diego,

The laptop you suggested is an HP Pavilion 17-f114dx. The specs suggest that it has 2 Super Speed USB 3.0 ports, but I'm not sure when this model was first manufactured -- the early versions of USB 3.0 did not perform according to the claims.

The manual for this laptop says that it uses USB board 767120-001, but I can't find the specs for the board. You should probably check to make sure it uses an Intel USB 3.0 controller.

If you can get your hands on the laptop at BestBuy, you might want to check the USB 3.0 controller manufacturer using the device manager and verify performance by copying a large file to a USB 3.0 stick. You can at least rule out this laptop if either of these tests fail.

You can also try calling HP support to see if they can give you more info on the USB 3.0 card, although support has been pretty lousy of late.

I think it would be a good idea to get an option to return the laptop if it turns out the USB 3.0 ports won't work with the Prime Sense camera.

I built an i5 Intel NUC for about $630.00 with a BOXD54250WYKH1, 16 GB of memory, a 250 GB SSD, and a 7260 WIFI and Bluetooth combo card. It works great. I saved some money by using Windows 10 and Visual Studio 2015. I already had a monitor, Bluetooth keyboard and Bluetooth mouse that I could use. The BOXD54250WYKH1 has room for a 2.5 hard drive if you want more space or don't want to spend the extra bucks for an SSD.

The Intel Core i5-4250U in the NUC has an Intel® HD 5000 graphics processor.

it has a usb 3.0, 4th gen Intel processor and price is just a little higher. its not a laptop :( though
