The XDK provides a great way to import an existing code-base from anywhere in the local filesystem.

It also provides a way to open the provided Templates, Samples and Demos from GitHub.

Is there a way to import an existing code-base directly from GitHub?

Nope, you'll have to clone the repo and import that into a project. The Brackets editor built into the XDK includes a very nice extension to the standard git tool which you can enable through the File > Extension Manager... menu (search for git in the dialog search bar that appears).
