Network Detection Software

Hi, I just bought a laptop, and I am very confused about how my wireless card works. I live on a Navy Base, and there are various places that provide free wifi. I'm told that my computer can some how detect,and connect to internet through the free wifi. But what I'm really interested in is detecting, and connecting to networks.

For instance.. The network in a hospital I used to work was available for employees. I remember a friend of mine would use his psp at work, and could connect to the internet using the network.

How is connecting and detecting a network possible? I found this software, but I can't find anywhere to download it. But the software is for xp,and i need Vista.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. I'm taking leave in Feburary, and I'd really like to learn how to get internet on my new laptop while at home.

The article "4 steps to set up your home wireless network" might give you some details about the setup and network detection. For the specific software, you need to check back with your manufacturer (IBM*, Dell*, and etc).

For understanding how exactly network works and I mean at deep technical level you must to muster usage of packet sniffer tools like Netmon and Wireshark.
