I am trying to send 4 vendor specific information elements of length 100 each in a probe request using WLAN API on windows., but I am getting below error

Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHz : The network adapter has returned an invalid value to the driver.

it is working when there are 2 elements of 100 each (or single IE of length 200) , but adding more or increasing length results into above error.

Please let me know the reasons of this failure

Kindly run this on your system so that I can also gauge the following peripherals and the driver versions that you have:

Intel® System Support Utility for Windows*

Once finished downloading, open the tool, click on scan (leave the default items checked), click next, then save the system information to a .txt file. Please provide us the .txt file.

To better help us further understand the issue, could you provide the needed details listed below:

May I know if the network adapter is working fine before?
Are there any changes on the system before you encounter this issue?
When did it start to happen?
Do you remember if this issue happened after a new OS update or driver update?
Have you tried a roll back to a previous driver version for testing?
Are you having issues on WiFi or Bluetooth or both?

I have written custom application where I am using WLAN API from Microsoft for windows to send the Probe Request via WlanScan function (wlanapi.h) and while sending the request I am adding 4 vendor specific information elements of length 100 each in a probe request using WLAN API on windows., but I am getting below error

Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHz : The network adapter has returned an invalid value to the driver.

it is working when there are 2 elements of 100 each (or single IE of length 200) , but adding more or increasing length results into above error.

I have reached out to Microsoft and they have looked into WLAN API traces and as per them there is no restriction from their API, their API is sending correct data to driver. And they have asked me to work with driver vendor. Thats why I am reaching here.

I have attached Microsoft answer here, so we wanted to know why driver is rehjecting this request?

Is there any limitation on driver side to send informational elements?

Is there any other way we can do this?

Here are answers to questions

May I know if the network adapter is working fine before? - There is no issue with network adapter, Please refer to my issue
Are there any changes on the system before you encounter this issue? - no
When did it start to happen? It is happending with this test only
Do you remember if this issue happened after a new OS update or driver update? no OS update

We have reviewed the logs and noticed that the current driver version is 23.60.1.2. To determine if the issue is driver-related, please ask the customer to follow these steps:

1. Perform a clean installation of the wireless driver.

2. Use the DELL driver version 23.60.1.2, A45, as this is an OEM computer. If the issue persists, proceed to step 3.

3. Install the latest generic wireless driver version 23.70.2.3.

Have you tried contacting Dell regarding to this issue?

Please note that this is an OEM device, we will try to assist you with general troubleshooting steps even if it's something not traditionally covered in our support. Your device manufacturer may have altered features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to some components for better compatibility with your system.

I have performed all the steps, but still result is same. I see your team is suggesting to reach out to dell, which I will reach out.

But i have question which I think your team should be able to answer from generic wireless driver perspective,

As stated below in logs shared by microsoft, they are sending 508 bytes for TLV WDI_TLV_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_IE? Will driver accept that much length of 508 bytes as TLV value and be able to forward to driver?

Can your team look from that front?

In addition to my last question, I have reached out to Dell also, here is the their answer

Based on the detailed observations, it seems likely that the issue they are encountering is indeed related to the limitations of the Intel AX211 Wi-Fi card when handling multiple vendor-specific Information Elements (IEs) in probe requests.

Hardware limitations could also dictate how much data can be processed in one go, especially for certain configurations or combinations. OR The firmware running on the Wi-Fi card might have built-in constraints regarding the processing of probe requests.

Look for any technical documentation regarding the AX211 chipset or reach out to Intel support directly to inquire about specific limitations on probe request sizes and configurations.

We would advise besides the above to work with developer zone in intel and request the same to be escalated as they are manufacturer for the drivers, the wifi api and also the card itself.
They should be able to attempt to replicate the issue as well at their lab.

Is using normal internet browsing, is AX211 working fine? - Yes this is working fine.
What is the special project parameter or configuration required for this custom application? - We need to pass some application specific params in probe request and that parameter is approx 300 bytes
How many unit of AX211 impacted? - We have observed mulitple AX211
Is it corporate customer or end-user? end-user
if corporate customer, is they contacted Intel rep. before?

1. Do you have any limits on sending vendor specific parameters in probe request inside AX211? is it by design?

2. Can your team perform a test and let us know if you are observing this behaviour in your test? As stated below in logs shared by microsoft, they are sending 508 bytes for TLV WDI_TLV_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_IE? Will driver accept that much length of 508 bytes as TLV value and be able to forward to driver? As per Dell also, Intel team should be able to replicate the issue in their lab? it would be nice that if your team can do it?

3. Is there any registry setting that can be used to control this behaviour?

4. Are there any hardware limitations or firmware limitations on card?
