OK - Scratch that - Kudos to Grinddude. I hadn't also copied the cab - which has now fixed it. To make things clean, I actually copied the files to \windows\installer, then uninstalled the ProSet software (which was showing as 15.6.1), uninstalled the drivers (16.5.3) which was showing separately, rebooted, deleted the files from \windows\installer, and then was able to run the 16.5.3 installer without errors.

Hi

I'm trying to install the new 16 drivers to fix the intermittent error on Windows 8, the installation fails part way through saying it can't read from c:\windows\installer\wifi.msi - a file which doesn't exist. Anyone got any ideas?

pete S

Hi! I had the same problem and it took me 2 days to resolve it...run regedit and then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components. Select "permissions" and make sure that your account has full rights. If not apply them and make sure that they will be inherited to every subfolder. Also don't forget to check the ownership. Then restart your computer and try to install again. If for some reason this option doesn't work then uninstall the existing Intel wifi drivers, reinstall them and then try to upgrade to version 16. It worked for me!

No joy sadly. Still the same, and I get the same error when I try to uninstall the drivers. The install seems to go through the driver install, then through the ProSet install, then starts something else (which I can't read) and then rollsback the earlier drivers and then gives the error message. Any more ideas from anyone?

Perhaps deleting the contents of some folders may help after a complete uninstall. Then, try again.

C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Intel

C:\ProgramData\Roaming\Intel*

C:\ProgramData\Intel*

C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Local\Temp

Is this issue only happening in Windows* 8 or is it only for Pete_S? Furthermore, is this an upgrade installation over Window* 7?

It could be that there are some remaining files or registry entries of the old driver not compatible with the newer operating system. Usually it is recommended to uninstall all drivers before upgrading to a new operating system.

It could also be related to the Windows* installer service. You may try the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/is-there-a-common-step-to-repair-windows-installer/136da4c2-0261-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/is-there-a-common-step-to-repair-windows-installer/136da4c2-0261-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

This isn't a win7 upgrade - this is a new machine which came with Win 8 OEM.

If I try and uninstall the package, I also get this error - so I can't update to the new, or uninstall the old.

Ok, you may still try the Microsoft* Fix It provided above. Now, since it is a new computer with OEM operating system and never been able to uninstall the driver you may need to consider contacting your system manufacturer.

Ok, I found a permanent solution for this problem. First you have to download the compressed version of the Proset (the latest one is the Wireless_16.5.3_e164.zip AFAIC) AND NOT the executable one. Use Winrar or 7-Zip and find the files wifi.msi and wifi1.cab, extract them to the folder C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER and you're all done. Now you can install/uninstall/upgrade without any problem. Let me know if this solution works for you!

Thanks for the link, but sadly get the same problem. Having unpacked the file, the setup fails in exactly the same way as the .exe download. Looking at the individual .msi, it's the wifi.msi which fails - the driver and bt ones install fine if run separately.
